I mean invent the genre of music for people to see as a new fresh style away from progressive rock at the time. I am telling you my friend NOONE in US knew anything about CBGB's other then a few of them who were there. The movement began in the UK and then the New York bands claimed that was what they were doing. Even Marley acknowledged The Pistols as revolutionary in their new style. I should have said "did he invent the movement" then and that would be better.
You can't say he didn't start the movement. Richard Hell couldn't even start an arguement.
first off gravity always existed, even if nobody knew it.........

There wasn't really a first Punk band. It evolved. Some people say the Stooges, some say the New York Dolls. But it certainly wasn't the Sex Pistols.

The Deviants pre-date even the Stooges

Maybe if that were true.

How come no one has mentioned the Damned? They pre-date most others mentioned in this thread.

The Dead Boys even came before the Ramones as well if I remember correctly.

The Dead Boys are seriously overlooked in Punk's history. Their debut came out in 1977 as well.
