Best Clash Album?

In your opinion, what is the best Clash album?

I would have to say London Calling. That album just kicked ass. I, not being a fan of The Clash's departure from Punk, actually like most of the non-punk songs on this album. Rudie Can't Fail is an amazing ska song. Their hard rock songs on this album such as Death Or Glory or I'm Not Down were incredible. Their covers of Brand New Caddillac and Wrong Em' Boyo are some of their best works.

Their second best would have to be their debut.

Thoughts?

GravitySlips 04-05-2008 11:06 AM

I'm not a big Clash fan, but I would agree with you in that London Calling is their best. The only other one I really like is the debut, although there are some good songs on the other albums.

London Calling it is.

sweet_nothing 04-05-2008 11:38 AM

Their first album got me into punk so it goes without saying

London Calling 4 me 2

duck 04-05-2008 07:00 PM

combat rock or london calling

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-05-2008 07:11 PM

For anyone that's interested.

The version of Combat Rock that was released was the bands 2nd attempt at recording it. Originally they tried to make the album with Mick Jones handling the production. From those sessions I present to you the original version of Should I Stay Or Should I Go , complete with more Spanish lyrics and a saxophone solo...

I've said many a time that London Calling is probably one of the best albums ever, so its got to be that.

Inuzuka Skysword 04-07-2008 12:16 PM

I like the first one to be honest.

Rainard Jalen 04-07-2008 12:32 PM

I never get these sorts of polls. I mean, how can The Clash's best studio album NOT be London Calling?!

Inuzuka Skysword 04-07-2008 12:56 PM

Because that was a later album that was built off of the sound of first album.

Comus 04-07-2008 01:14 PM

I'm the only one that likes Sandinista! as my favourite clash album :(

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-07-2008 02:01 PM

No way , I love that album.

Favourite? Maybe not but I rate it highly.

jackhammer 04-07-2008 02:13 PM

I honestly love Super Black Market Clash but there was outside work on that one. Combat Rock is very high on my love list.

So what? The fact is the songs are better, it's more consistent, and they refined and perfected that sound on LC - along with exhibiting even greater diversity.

I agree, you cant honestly say that any off their other albums are actually better than London Calling, because they simply were not. London Calling will always be there best studio album

Everything in bold is opinion. Since you based your fact solely on opinion, it fails.

sweet_nothing 04-07-2008 07:16 PM

I find London Calling vastly overrated i think it's good but not as good most of you make it out to be

GravitySlips 04-07-2008 07:19 PM

It's my favourite Clash album, but yes...vastly overrated anyway.

Piss Me Off 04-08-2008 07:39 AM

Jones isn't on it
Headon isn't on it
Simonen only plays on one song

As far as i'm concered it's not a Clash album it's a Bernie Rhodes album as performed by Joe Strummer.

Piss Me Off 04-08-2008 11:48 AM

No one familiar with sarcasm?

Urban Hat€monger ? 04-08-2008 12:08 PM

I got it was sarcasm , I just have stong feelings on it and felt like a rant.

Piss Me Off 04-08-2008 12:51 PM

Fair play. I think it shows that, while Mick Jones was a massive arrogant egotistical ****, he was pretty essential to the band. Classic case of 2 band members competing together and making brilliant music as a result.

Seltzer 04-30-2008 10:53 PM

London Calling for me - I've been listening to that album non-stop lately.

icebox 05-04-2008 11:48 PM

I only have "The Clash" album so...

jacklovezhimself 05-06-2008 06:45 PM

wow this poll is no suprise whatsoever.

sl1ck 05-11-2008 03:08 PM

London Calling, although The Clash is a fantastic record as well. London Calling is a classic though, so it gets my vote.

Nirvana_man 05-24-2008 11:08 AM

I liked their first album, mind you I also like London Calling, but their self titled album debut was just awesome

baphomet4all 05-24-2008 11:14 AM

i have to agree with nirvana man... first album nd london calling were great!!

Grud 05-25-2008 08:33 AM

Give em enough rope is a clear favourite for me.

Blain 05-25-2008 06:27 PM

I've only ever listened to London Calling, I enjoyed it pretty thoroughly though.

That's a sin.

London Calling.

Pat Mustard 06-06-2008 09:04 AM

I love all their stuff apart from Give 'Em Enough Rope (mediocre) and Cut the Crap (Urban Hatemonger got it spot on).

The Clash is perhaps their best collection of songs
London Calling is them at the overall height of their powers
Sandinista! is perhaps their most impressive statement - for all the terrible ****e on their I think it's two thirds magnificent, and ranks as one of the great albums
Combat Rock manages to successfully combine the band's twin ambitions of becoming more commercially successful (and writing songs that people would play on the jukebox thirty years later) whilst still doing stuff that no other band with their sales would have the guts to do.

Ghostrider 06-14-2008 04:52 AM

I love The Clash, they were my fave band to come out of the punk/new wave invasion from Britain. I got to see them live the year they released Combat Rock, great concert but they played in the ****tiest possible venue here. About 40 people had to be rushed to the hospital for heat prostration and a dozen more were trampled when the hard core fans rushed the stage, Joe Strummer actually stopped the show to tell the fans to F**K Off!,,, and back away from the stage.

1-London Calling
2-Sandanista
3-The Clash

angel_from_your_nightmare 06-27-2008 01:46 PM

It's really a tossup for me between their first album and London Calling. They're both great and worth equal respect for what they were and did musically. I think Sandinista is underrated but it takes a Clash fan to enjoy it as it definitely bogs down at times.
