You just have to have a certain taste for it to still be important and that's what I imagine Queen's place to be.

Their time has passed and it will only be relevant to a minority of people who have a taste for that form of rock. They are no longer relevant even if there are still fans who are picking up what they're putting down.
I don't know, does someone more contemporary cover the market on fruity cabaret rock?

Dream Theater? Ayreon? I hope they have better representation or else they're ****ed.

lol I never thought of those as following the legacy of Queen. LaBrie is a poor man's Freddie. Very, very, very poor.

I'm thinking that maybe in a way Lady Gaga and just extravagant modern pop in general robs Queen of relevance, even though it's not rock. That is, if I go along with your original premise.

I mean ****ty modern prog metal has some of the pomp even if they have none of the pop songwriting. TBH say what you want about Queen but they did have a unique sound that doesn't really have derivative followers.

There's certain things they did with guitar voicings and vocal mixing that I've never heard anyone else do. The only bands I've heard mimic their songwriting a bit only capture one particular side of the band (The Darkness for example). A song like A Kind of Magic shows so many unique Queen isms that together sound like no other band.

Makes me think of this Between the Buried and Me cover. Like, are they trying to make a Queen cover relevant to them or are they trying to make a cover that sounds exactly like Queen cause they don't want to sound like a screamy band, and so you have a completely pointless song.

That was indeed completely pointless.

I usually hate it when metal bands try to cover non-metal songs. And I say "try", because the results are usually embarrassing.

I don't care enough to argue about it, but I like some of their songs. Queen was more of a thing for me when I was young, though.
