What exactly is Punk?

Typically punk bands were thought of as only playing underground shows and fighting the establishment. But now bands like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are considered punk by some. So what is punk defined as now?

i'm hoping your name is some kind of statement illustrating that if good charlotte and simple plan can be considered punk by some, then its not so much of a stretch to consider nsync as punk. well it is a stretch, a band needs to at the very least play insrtuments to be considered punk.

You cant really define punk!!! It was so much!!! and more!!! although perhaps now it is dead.

N*SYNCisPUNK 11-27-2004 10:08 PM

my name speaks for itself, but msync is what we are discussing

i agree that punk may be dead, but i still want to know EXACTLY what separates a punk band from the wanna-bes

rotten_save 11-27-2004 10:14 PM

Thats a hard question because nowadays you cant help be contradict yourself when you talk about whos real and who is pretending. many of the bands like simple plan and the newer generation havent really LIVED punk like how it was in the 70's. But i guess you could say that punk was about rebellion. But now you have these middle class-rich kids dressing punk and stuff!!! So it's not rebelling anymore.

i dont think you have to live a certain way to play punk music. i also dont think there are guys who pretend to live that way, especially matured adults. you cant say that "punk is dead" because theyve been saying that since the 80s. punk music is coming out in abundance (more so now than ever), and it may not be as good as the old shiiit, so if you dont like it, then maybe you should stick wit the bands from the past

rotten_save 11-28-2004 12:03 PM

But punk had its "values" if you couuld even cal them that but it IS rebelling!!!!!!
How can these people be rebelling if they are copying everyone else!!!!!?????

whenever anyone tries to 'define' punk someone always ends up getting mad because there just is no 'definition' for it. My thought is Good Charlotte and Simple Plan are pretty much only considered punk because of the way some of the guys dress and how things like MTV are saying it only because stuff like that sells.

Oi_To_The_World 11-28-2004 02:48 PM

^ i dunno. i think mtv calls it punk because theyre playing g unit and clay aiken right before gc videos. when you have some tool that has no idea what the fuk is going on, he/she is gonna call gc punk. especially when compared to rap or pop.

jesus 11-28-2004 04:19 PM

yeah but mtv is sitting there calling it punk half the time on their stupid shows which also probably helps. http://music.channel.aol.com/artist/...rtistid=442724 <that site even says they're ska haha(punk/ska)
