The Smiths definitely aren't punk. Neither are VU, Modern Lovers or Wire. Television is debatble, but Damaged and Fresh Fruit are two of the best punk albums ever.

They may not be punk in the strict genre sense of the term, but they were one of the founding bands of the New York CBGB's scene, so if they can't be considered punk then I quit.

Thdn you may has well just consider The Stooges, MC5 etc as punk acts.

They're influential bands but I wouldn't call them punk.
