Best Punk album of all time?

Mines has got to be Subhumans-The day the country died

It's got to be played from first song right through to the last as most songs mix into one other.

Oh! PLAY IT LOUD

What is your all time favorite Punk album?

Howard the Duck 04-10-2012 05:41 AM

The Ramones' s/t tied with the Clash's s/t (UK)

it's not a sub-genre i listen much to, besides the British 1st wave and the founding fathers

Two excellent choices there and are hard to beat. I must admit though the Dead Kennedys Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables and Black Flag Damaged are on the same level. I'd even chuck in Stranglers Rattus Norvegicus as well, but that's probably more new-wave.

Goofle 04-10-2012 06:27 AM

Wire - Chairs Missing

Certainly not The Clash's S/T.

Subhumans UK. One of my alltime favorite albums also.

For variety's sake, I will throw out The Varukers- Bloodsuckers. Its usually between them and Discharge.

I listened to this with one of my good friends the other day and we were weeping like babies. It brought back so many awesome memories and people I had forgotten in time. I can only listen to it on occassion now as i get weepy at the first sound of this album.

bob. 04-10-2012 12:44 PM

i know right! :)

Subvert City, All Gone Dead, No.....these songs had such a strong influence on my introduction to the punk scene

Agree. There's just WAY too many albums to think about. Maybe narrowing it down to eras, but certainly not of all time.

bob. 04-10-2012 01:01 PM

i won't lie Minor Threat's discography is what popped in my head.....i mean 26 songs and i still know every word and every breakdown.....but then i think about Circle Jerks, bad Religion, J Church, Rudimentary Peni.....yep impossible!

Goofle 04-10-2012 01:08 PM

"Live At The Witch Trials" might not be singularly punk, but I'm putting it up there.

yeah Minor Threat is a favourite with me as well

BastardofYoung 04-14-2012 02:03 AM

I do not know, I can think of tons of albums I would list above Minor Threat.

Bad Brains - ROIR
Black Flag - Damaged
NoMeansNo - Wrong
Dead Kennedys - Plastic Surgery Disasters (yes, I am picking this over Fresh Fruit)
Dayglo Abortions - Feed Us A Fetus
Dead Boys - Young Loud and Snotty
Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material
The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette
Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime

and on and on and on and on...

Minor Threat are good, and I love them. But I find Discography to be lop sided. More great songs on the first half, and drags on near the end. Do not think it is consistent enough to be above any of those albums listed and many more I could mention if I so desired at the moment.

Especially out of those, Bad Brains and Damaged.

Even overall in hardcore, Minor Threat arent one of my favorites. Articles of Faith, Battalion of Saints, Genetic Control, Deep Wound, Gang Green, The F.U.'s, Wasted Youth... list goes on here too. Think there were tons more bands that don't get credit.

The ones bolded I know. Should listen to that Damned album again as its been mentioned a couple of times on here, also need to listen to that Dead Kennedy's album again. Personally I never really cared for Stiff Little Fingers.

Goofle 04-14-2012 02:04 PM

How do you not know Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime?

It's fantastic, certainly check it out.

Bishie 04-14-2012 06:07 PM

Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables and The Ramones - Road to Ruin

It has a swagger all of it's own and if we are talking a more Hardcore sound then this pisses all over your Minor Threats and Dead Kennedys all day long:

I assent to this. Also one of my favorites although it might not technically fall under punk rock

Frownland 04-15-2012 11:26 AM

I'd say that it's either The Pop Group's Y or The Fall's Hex Enduction Hour, even though both do generally fall under the post-punk category, I see them as the best.

Unknown Soldier 04-17-2012 02:44 AM

Been listening to Machine Gun Etiquette as a number of people have sung its praises on here, I have to now concede that it is one of the best 1st wave punk albums that I've heard, the songs are just soooooo good far better than I remembered them to be. I'd also say it was better than their debut album, which to be fair I never thought was as good as the Ramones, Sex Pistols or Clash debuts.

This song sounds like one of those that inspired early Metallica. Some real thrashy sounding punk.

Whats do you guys think of the Ruts, worth listening to or not?

Howard the Duck 04-17-2012 05:44 AM

^^no idea, I've only heard the Rutles, which were a pretty good parody group

warrior of metal 04-17-2012 12:07 PM

Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables is the best.

Unknown Soldier 04-17-2012 04:17 PM

I'm not a huge fan of the Buzzcocks but surprised nobody has mentioned their debut which is a great album, or are the Buzzocks too pop-punk for you hardcore elitists on here?

Its certainly an essential album regardless of whether people like it or not. Personally i enjoy the buzzcocks, pretty damn good band.

James 04-17-2012 05:15 PM

I love The Buzzcocks. Another Music... is fantastic, as is Spiral Scratch and Singles Going Steady is one of the greatest compilations of all time. Nothing wrong with a bit of Pop Punk.

As for best Punk album. London Calling. If you disregard all subgenres and focus on pure Punk. For sure.As for first wave Punk albums, I'd say The Clash had the best debut too. I think The Slits, The Adverts and The Banshees deserve a mention though, they haven't been brought up much. Cut is a classic.

I'd take the Clash debut over London Calling everytime.

Singles Going Steady is great

Its because bands like Siouxsie & the Banshees normally get included under the post-punk category, at times its a very gray area between punk and post-punk.

I tend to think punk bands of the late 1970s (pre-hardcore era) fell into three areas.

Punk- As the name suggests, straight-up punk.
Punk/New Wave- More melodic bands that straddled this line, Buzzcocks are a good example.
Punk/Post-Punk- Bands expanding out of the basic creative confines of punk, whilst still retaining a punky feel.

I've just been listening to their second album Love Lies and have to now say that's just as good as the debut. I've also got to say that the Buzzcocks are now a very good band.:)
