The Sex Pistols were dropped after the Grundy television show appearence & after Anarchy In The UK was banned because the EMI board didn`t want them representing the lable, all of which happened in the same week. All the gig banning came after the album came out (On Virgin) when they were a mainstream name , not before when they were still basically playing punk clubs.

Actually Lydon has said on a number of occasions that he respects Branson for having the balls to sign them.And they`re still signed to Virgin now , which is now owned by EMI coincidently

You`ve been paying too much attention to Malcolm McLarens words.The Sex Pistols were no more manufactured by Malcolm McLaren than the Clash were by Bernie Rhodes. The Pistols basically rejected every idea McLaren came up with , compare that with Joe Strummer who was always working with Bernie Rhodes, coming up with ideas for the Clash.The only time McLaren got his own way was for The Great Rock n Roll Swindle movie , and by that point Lydon had left the band anyway.
