Early Clash is definitely punk. It's not really until London Calling where they really branch out into other forms of music, notably reggae and maybe some jazz. No, they were never quite as abrasive as the Pistols but all the anger was certainly there.

yeah cause I listened to Sandinista! and that didn't sound like punk to my unexperienced ears. Not bad record though, just very long. But nah Nevermind the Bollocks is great

Also on a side note, I do not really understand how the clash is punk. Sure, they do have songs that sound punk, but for me a lot of their stuff does not sound punk at all, or maybe I just don't know what I am talking about.
First two The Clash albums are full-on punk rock, but London Calling is more new wave than punk rock, although it has some punk material. Subsequent albums are generally not punk.

First word that comes to mind when I hear Flock of Seagulls is punk.

I fought the law and the law won. Plenty of punk there.

Well according to Hilly Kristal in his book about CBGB, The Ramones could be pretty wild when not doing shows. I guess they just figured that they better behave when people are looking at them as the band. Privately may be another matter.

Ramones and Nevermind the Bollocks are pretty much tied for me, depends on the day. But Ramones have a whole career after that, so they take it by default.

Lemme say this, the fact Sex Pistols still piss so many people off nearly 50 years later makes them more punk than the Ramones if you ask me.

The Ramones are the most sacred cow in the genre and while I do like them I really don't get the mythos built around them, I mean yeah a lot of the mythos built around the Sex Pistols was bullsh*t too but everyone knows that, the Ramones were just a bunch of boomers who were pissed off that rock music no longer sounded like it did in the pre-psychedelic 60s so they formed what was essentially a goofy novelty band whose whole schtick was playing bubblegum pop songs really loud. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, I just don't see what's so punk about yearning for the past. Did it really shock anyone that Johnny Ramone ended up being a conservative?

Ramones certainly had the more fruitful career but I'll be lying if I said I didn't enjoy Never Mind the Bollocks more than any of their albums. It's so impressively obnoxious it makes the Ramones sound a little... sedated.

Sorry I couldn't help myself.

Do you think Rotten is doing that more for shock value?
