I'd put them in the same category as the 80s bands Husker Du and Moving Targets - punk influenced alternative rock. I guess their early stuff (the Sweet Children EP in particular) could count as punk but even then they were more melodic than any other punk band I can think of from California at the time. I'd define these as being the different Green Day eras:

Early demos and gigs; possibly the Sweet Children EP, since release date claims vary (1987-88)
1000 Hours/Slappy/39 Smooth/Kerplunk (1988-92)
Dookie/Insomniac (1993-6)
Nimrod/Warning (1997-2003)
American Idiot/21st Century Breakdown (2004-2009)
Uno/Dos/Tres (2010s)

I probably like the Dookie era Green Day most, but really anything up to American Idiot is decent.

How does more melody make it less punk? A lot of modern punk bands have more melody and they still sound just as punk. From the ''Orgcore'' stuff like the Flatliners and Lawrence Arms, to the ''Crack Rock Steady'' ska punk bands like Choking Victim, to melodic hardcore like A Wilhelm Scream, to Hardcore like PEARS. melody in punk is a pretty normal thing now. The only real difference is that the latter has a fully clean voice as it's pop punk, but it's still punk.

Punk Rock, Pop Punk and Emo are what come to mind with Jawbreaker, I can't fathom hot someone could not see them as punk, they sound punk as ****. They were also part of the bay area Punk scene. And that songs about all the punks who keep saying certain bands aren't ''Punk enough''. The general timbre is like punk music, The simple riffing (both rhythmically and melodically) on the song is exactly like Punk music, the rough amateur vocals are like Punk music, I don't see how it suddenly should be shoved under alt rock instead of the punk umbrella. Man some people are so narrow on what's Punk.

Wasn't that at their last album ''Dear You'' most of the fans aren't a fan of anyways? That one gets closer to alternative rock, but a: That's not where the song Boxcar is from, and b: I often forget that album even exists.
