A black 20-something-year-old in a hoodie, complete with fake-gold chains, listening to Slint in a convertible would be mine.

There is no band more white than Slint. Sure, they're a great white band, but they're whiteness shines regardless. To be frank, if somebody even just photoshopped a picture of Spiderland into a black man's hands, I would laugh for hours.

also: I just spit out my drink at the very idea of a stereotypical 'thug' singing "CREEPING UP INTOO THEEEE SKYYYYYYYY!!!" I may need help with this...

Like, I was just driving through this small town with my windows open and music pumping and anyway I let this family cross in front of me. They didn't give me a courteous wave or anything and, in fact, all they did was just kinda stare at me. It took me like a full five seconds for me to realize I had Lupe Fiasco blasting out of my subwoofers

THE COOLEST NIGGA, WHAT?! THE COOLEST NIGGA, WHAT?! LORD PLEASE HAVE SYMPATHY AND FORGIVE MY COOL YOUNG HISTORY AS THE COOLEST NIGGA...

Then I drove away in abject shame. What's the solution to this, can I never listen to hip hop in public by the light of day? How do other lame white people deal with this kind of delicate situation?

I'm 23 and I've never had a car. It's not high on my priorities. But when I'm riding shotgun, I will turn the volume as loud as the driver will allow, and then probably sneak another notch up in between songs. It's the thrill of your favorite (GOOD) songs in a great system in that confined space that makes you feel just right...

I'm not about waking up neighborhoods. But people on sidewalks. Whatev. It's only momentary. As a civilian primarily, when someone drives by blasting a song I know, it makes my day. If I go around blasting Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song, I'm going to get a lot more positive responses than blasting TPain Aesop Rock or WuTang Clan even.

As long as the music is good and the system is good... who cares? My problem is people (white or black) who bump their music so loud and have crappy systems... it's horrible

Music is music. And what music you're "allowed" to like has nothing to do with the color of your skin. As a black man, i appreciate all genre's of music and I damn sure don't scowl at white people when I see them listening to hip hop. So those who scowled at you, consider them ignorant, not as representations of how the entire black community feels. Listen to what you want to listen to. As loud as you want to listen to it.
