I wouldn't start if I was you.
Contrary to what others have said, I think Tha Carter III is a terrible album.
My little brother used to play it, and every song is just horrible.

That's just my opinion though, there are many people who would disagree.

Hello all! I just want some quality stuff that's relatively new. It doesn't have to be underground, but I would prefer lesser known artists. A couple of my friends are into Hip-Hop and post well known artists all the time on Facebook, so I have that covered.

If you like these three from XV check out his mixtapes Zero Heroes, Vizzy Zone and Everybody's Nobody.

There's some new gems in my post on the page before this. A lot of jazzy rap. Especially the Fresh Breath Committee.

Also, this:

I'm sure that lots of you know him, but I would recommend Necro, my recent "discovery". I don't know how I could have missed him earlier

CanwllCorfe 09-16-2011 02:18 PM

Thanks dj!

Yeah that's some great stuff.

EDIT: I had downloaded an album before I did a system recovery, and the cover had all the different rappers involved on it. Does anyone know what that one is? They all had baseball uniforms on.

So what's new and hip to the hop in the world of teh raps son?

The only albums I've bought this year are Atmosphere and Blue Scholars, and that's just depressing.

Hail Mary Mallon's "Are You Gonna Eat That" is great.

Also, if you don't know, HMM is Aesop Rock + Rob Sonic + DJ Big Wiz.

pourmeanother 09-21-2011 11:16 PM

Always had mad respect for your taste, Kirby. Will dig into this further...

You should have gotten Gutter Rainbows back in Jan.

Section 80 is a pretty solid album.

You should also check out Oneirology from CunninLynguists.

Greatest Story Never Told finally dropped this year too.

Shabazz Palaces-Black Up (this one is IMPORTANT)
Danny Brown-XXX (some songs are trash and some are brilliant)
Curren$y x Alchemist-Covert Coup
DJ Quik- The Book of David
Mr. Mutha****in' eXquire-Lost in Translation

These are the really tight ones so far. Hail Mary Mallon is good too, but I don't think it has very much lasting value. Also, download all of these for free.

I think Garfield and Breakdance Beach are very subpar BUT I like the album...

Table Talk is THE song of the record. Smock is dope. Meter Feeder is catchy. Kneivel is also very entertaining.

But Table Talk is one of my most played songs of the last 3 months already. And if as a whole the record doesn't have lasting power, I still know anytime Aes Rock goes pass the peas I'm in for a rockin verse...

Thom Yorke 09-28-2011 10:15 AM

Saw HMM mentioned and Table Talk is the song that jumped into my head. Unbelievable song and definitely the best on the album. Ace on the second verse is up there for one of my favourite verses. I also really like Knievel.

MRNOMADIC 09-28-2011 11:07 AM

Quite into Jazzy hip hop and my favourites are:

Sound Providers
MF Doom
Evidence
Kero one
Raw Breed
Fat Jon
Das EFX

I've been hearing a lot about French hip-hop, and I must say I'm intrigued. Any suggestions where to start/maybe some artists they are comparable to as well...?

I like MC Solaar. Give him a wee look in.

Electrophonic Tonic 10-01-2011 01:22 PM

Someone asked what was new on the scene earlier in the thread...

iconAclass is the new project of Will Brooks (aka MC dalek, of Dalek). Pretty awesome stuff, still has his great, pointed political lyrics. But the music is a little more traditional for hip-hop. Still awesome stuff.

Thom Yorke 10-04-2011 09:30 PM

18 year old from Ireland. Pretty dope.

TockTockTock 10-10-2011 11:13 PM

I'm currently looking for a non-instrumental hip hop album that's not too repetitive and highly experimental. You know... something instrumentally impressive (you could say "progressive" hip hop, haha).

EDIT: Sorry for asking this... I'm sure that many others have asked this in the past.

If you've never listened to them, you could try Look Daggers.

Black Up - Shabazz Palaces. Could be the album of the year.

Not a hip hop album, but alot of people consider it at least partially hip hop. It's pretty sick either way. A Sufi and a Killer - Gonjasufi.

I can dig this.

This is what I've been on today

Phantom Limb 10-14-2011 02:25 PM

^Squadda B track was pretty tight. I'm gonna download it right now.

Sparky 10-14-2011 02:49 PM

I concur, im listening to it while trying to roll some **** right now

Thom Yorke 10-15-2011 12:22 PM

That track's pretty sick.

Have many people heard Nottz's "I Still Love You"? Nothing special lyrically at all, but this beat is so awesome. Better than J Dilla's U-Love.

TheWinterSoulstice 10-24-2011 11:43 PM

Give Mos Def and Immortal Technique a try, highly recommended.

Mrd00d 10-25-2011 12:06 AM

I just caught myself up on 2011 in hip-hop, as far as what I wanted to grab and I'm excited to check them all out... I found a couple surprises:

Freestyle Fellowship - The Promise
Myka 9 - Mykology

Vast Aire - OX 2010 A Street Odyssey
Casual - The Hierophant
Opio & Equipto - Red X Tapes
Shabazz Palaces - Black Up (read a recommendation for it in the 2011 thread)
Sunspot Jonz - Galaxy of Dreams
Cunninlynguists - Oneirology
Das Racist - Relax

Now it's not just Hail Mary Mallon for me this year... ha.

I tried OFWGWTF and Tyler's albums but didn't dig em...

Edit: The bolded are "Can't Miss", absolutely awesome.

Dcpballa1 10-30-2011 09:51 AM

Section 80 - Kendrick Lamar

dancer9 10-31-2011 11:58 PM

Hip hop music and dance both are quite different genre. I love hip hop music and I train people in this dance format.

Also, Doomtree and Childish Gambino have albums this year.

Metal Connoisseur 11-01-2011 08:42 PM

I'm not really an avid hip hop listener, but I have been listening to quite a bit of Freddie Gibbs and Random Axe lately. Any recs based on those two artists? Anything would be appreciated. Thanks.

Daprez88 11-03-2011 01:39 PM

Better bet is 2010's Survival Story. That is an amazing record. They really came together for it.

that_dude 11-07-2011 02:55 PM

Big L's Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous, was something Pandora put me on to and is definitely a banger.
