That's a pretty good point. Especially because there are releases within the genre that are instrumental.

I disagree. Call instrumental hip-hop just hip-hop I guess. Or call all rap music hip-hop if you want, but I don't see why. Rappers rap. They make rap music.

To me it makes sense because the style of music exists both with and without rapping. Calling it rap when there's no rapping doesn't make much sense but calling it hip hop covers both possibilities.

Yeah, I also default to calling it all 'hip hop' because of all the complications.

But there's really no reason to vilify the term 'rap music'
