I'd have to disagree. Hendrix and Cobain write extremely different types of songs so it's extremely hard to say who's better at song writing. However, if your going to judge so quickly I'd say listen to the song If 6 Was 9 by Jimi. It's ****ing brilliant.

I think they are very equal musicians becides the fact that Jimi Hendrix could play guitar like a ****ing god. So yes Jimi Hendrix is a better guitar player.

jacklovezhimself 08-27-2007 03:27 PM

o i forgot about eric clapton....that too.

I agree with you 100 percent. In fact, I think I will take it a step further and say that Rothery is a much better technical player than Gilmour. Of course, this probably shows more in Steve's early stuff with Marillion.

And I don't mean to talk down about Gilmour either, I think he is a fine guitarist, but I wouldn't consider him one of the greatest.

I also want to throw in John Mitchell ... I think the guy is great.

Hey camjoe! It's temp100 from EBWF.

Frusciante and Latimer are my favourite guitarists.

As for Clapton, he's not fit to re-string Hendrix's guitar.

Really? I don't think re-stringing his guitar would be THAT difficult. >_>

Who said it was?

sal calypso 08-28-2007 06:05 PM

george harrison was pretty damn good. i'm not fond of shredders. if music was really about talent, then malmsteen would be a god. but its not about talent. its about wit. a 2 minute solo at 2000 notes per minute is never going to blow my mind, but 4 well crafted notes just might, if you're smart enough to figure it out.

MHDTV 08-28-2007 06:25 PM

Errrm...George Harrison is a no-no in greatest guitarist discussions.

Advent 08-30-2007 09:15 PM

I'm absolutely amazed that this managed to make it to 25 pages, covering technical virtuosos and even shred guitar throughout, and there wasn't even so much as a single mention of Jason Becker. Becker was an absolute shred pioneer at the very least worthy of mention or something. For sheer technical skill, speed, clarity, and even improvisation, Vai can't touch him, Stump can't touch him, Malmsteen can't touch him. In fact, the only person who I'd even venture to say could come close to him in any of those categories would likely be Impellitteri, but he still gets sloppy (Not necessarily a bad thing) at times. Becker was a neo-classical god, a complete prodigy at sixteen, and even after becoming permanently paralyzed, continued to write and compose music for nothing but the sake of music. Whether it's blues, classical, or some over-the-top shredfest, Becker has no doubt done it with complete and utter ease.

And then people mentioning influential guitarists and nobody bothering to bring up Link Wray even once? The guy practically introduced the entire concept of distortion, popularized power chords, and was really an innovator in guitar playing. Sure, guys like Hendrix came along and influenced countless more and set these 'standards', but there are more than enough music critics and enthusiasts out there that say Hendrix and that entire playing style wouldn't even exist without guys like Link Wray.

Are either of these guys the 'best'? One might be technically so, but that's it. Is either the greatest? Likely not. But they at least receive a hell of a lot more recognition than some of the guys being thrown out there.

MHDTV 08-30-2007 09:22 PM

Fanboy's have ruined many a great thread.

robert smith of the cure, listen to his solo of "A Forest" on "Live In Orange"

ProggyMan 09-08-2007 08:14 PM

Cure fangirl. Robert Smith being brought up in a greatest guitarist thread.

sleepy jack 09-08-2007 08:19 PM

Robert Smith can play a 12 string guitar and a 6 string bass, hes not exactly what you would call bad at the instrument. He has also written some great riffs.

ProggyMan 09-08-2007 08:47 PM

Not saying he's bad at all, he's very good, but seriously. Putting him up for greatest guitarist? Pretty ridiculous.

sleepy jack 09-08-2007 08:52 PM

The thread was opened with Kurt Cobain =/

ProggyMan 09-08-2007 09:01 PM

And if I had had a life back when this thread started I would have refuted such an untruth as that.

Mr_headshot 09-09-2007 01:25 PM

Also, I forgot to mention Zakk Wylde

ProggyMan 09-09-2007 01:46 PM

How the hell is he the greatest guitarist?

Mr_headshot 09-10-2007 12:20 AM

You realize he plays all downstrokes correct?

Not to mention he plays with a great deal of emotion, attitude, and plays it with speed. This isn't something many guitar players can pull off.

I've looked a few pages back and haven't been able to find anything but you saying people are stupid for their favorite guitarists. Could you say who yours would be?
Because, gessing by your name alone, I'd be inclined to believe you like Petrucci (sp?) =/ and he just plays fast...meh =/

ProggyMan 09-10-2007 02:26 AM

Yah, I think Petrucci is great riff writer, and a very technically skilled player. Your emotion point is moot by the way. Still haven't showed me how he's the greatest.

Mr_headshot 09-10-2007 09:58 PM

how the hell is emotion moot?

Being great, to a certain point, is about personal preference. When I hear Zakk play (especially live) it blows me away, he amazes me with technical ability AS WELL AS the emotion he uses (see book of shadows for reference).
Petrucci does absolutely nothing for me, like Malmsteen. He's fast, as all hell, but when he plays it's like he's saying, "hey look how fast and perfect I can play" whereas with other guitar players whom I like it's like, "hey, this is how I was feeling at the time I played and recorded this."
The combination of emotion and ability is rare IMO.

But then again, David Gilmour is one of my favorite guitar players ever; and that has nothing to do with technical ability or speed.

ProggyMan 09-10-2007 10:10 PM

I don't hear emotion emanating from Wylde's guitar, so yah, I would consider it a moot point.

Mr_headshot 09-10-2007 10:41 PM

Ok, well that's you. I've seen him make people cry with his stuff. Listen to some of his accoustic stuff. Youtube dead as yesterday, you might be surprised.

ProggyMan 09-10-2007 10:50 PM

Acoustic might have his distinctive style show through more, but with electric...

Mr_headshot 09-11-2007 07:42 AM

Very understandable, I realize most of his solos on electric are kind of monotonous and neanderthal[ish] but definately check out his accoustic stuff; it might change your mind duder.

ProggyMan 09-11-2007 07:55 PM

Still wouldn't consider him the best or greatest, but he gained a few points.

It's a bit harsh to say that about Petrucci if you haven't heard much by him. For example, his song Glasgow Kiss is pretty cool - it carries emotion IMO.

ProggyMan 09-16-2007 06:50 PM

I've always wondered what the DT hate is about.

Mr_headshot 09-16-2007 10:48 PM

I had my Petrucci phase. His saving grace, I.E. why he's so much better than other technical shredders, is that he has GREAT melodic ability. But watching him play...=/ he always has this look on his face like "hey, I'm better than you will ever possibly be"
I mean, watch the G3 DVD with Vai, Sach, and him. It's just unfullfilling.
DT is very impressive, being a drummer I know this as well as anyone. The ability to go through so many time signatures so fast is rare and incredible, but that doesn't make it satisfying. And for a band or music to be great it must be satisfying and enjoyable, not simply technically masterful.

Just my opinion.
