Sure. I still think mine is more valid! :)

There was no point in necro-ing the thread.

sleepy jack 10-10-2007 08:48 PM

He didn't necro it, someone has been going through and voting on all of Don's threads that were polls thus bumping them.

My favorite's currently are:

Paul Gilbert - Crazy fast, in my opinion one of the best shredders.

Eric Johnson - possibly the most technically sound guitar player in the world.

Andy Timmons - slick. nuff said.

Joe Satriani - Not necessarily for his technicality, but I like the funky style.

Dino Cazares (sp?) - Divine Heresy is pretty sweet. His riffs are like a machine gun. Very solid player.

Adam Dutkiewicz - Just a solid playing style.

Michael Romeo - I've never seen sausages move so fast.

Yngwie Malmsteen - nuff said.

Paul is my fav too dood

keep rockin :)

PerFeCTioNThrUSileNCe 10-15-2007 11:25 PM

YouTube - Paul Gilbert - Scarified
YouTube - paul gilbert -The Curse Of Castle Dragon

He's got sweet guitars too. I want that orange one so bad.

BrokenChains 10-16-2007 01:25 PM

Close between Kirk Hammett and Dave Mustaine for me. But I picked Kirk

BrokenChains 10-16-2007 01:31 PM

I think it's James Hetfield as far as rythem guitarists go...and if he wasn't singing I'd say he could be the best lead guitar as well.

gb550 10-21-2007 09:03 PM

hendrix

TheinvincibleClam 10-23-2007 04:35 PM

Eric Clapton is Definately the best guitarist. He is a god and he can even write his own songs!!

gb550 10-23-2007 06:16 PM

Vai and Satriani if it's about technical/composition, but these guys are much lower on the list if the poll was about who actually sounds best

Carm.bono 10-24-2007 09:24 AM

its hard to say out of that which is the best...like they all have their own specialties...I would have said kirk just out of love for teh band he is in but in truth i believe its slash, he is pretty freaking good! But also jimi was excellent! even though half of his solos were played while he had acid in his headband lol thats godly!!!

ghettoguitar 10-24-2007 10:42 AM

Jimmy Page, who else has written that many classic guitar riffs?

Wayfarer 10-24-2007 12:05 PM

Tony Iommi has. Hell, Josh Homme has.

.MP3 10-24-2007 04:04 PM

Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, and Buckethead

ProggyMan 10-24-2007 08:26 PM

Jimi Hendrix has written more than anyone else relative to the amount of material he's released.

certainshadeofgreen 10-24-2007 08:57 PM

This list is incomplete and doesn't include Django Reinhardt.

Therefore, it is invalid and pointless.

imdesigner 10-27-2007 09:50 AM

Josh Homme!

Well no kidding it's incomplete, no one can make a list to fit everyone.

That is a very informative list of great guitarist RezZ. One of the better list I've seen on a music forum. I have been in many debate's about who is the best. And the answer seems to alway's end with, 'There is no best'. Only the best of the best. As to keep myself from being attacked by others, I usually state, 'Who is your favorite guitarist'?, etc. And even then, someone will always twist & turn the word's to fit their own criteria. So..,there are just to many different style's, & level's of talent, to state one is 'the best'. We all may have our individual opinion's on who is the best, But in the end. You will find that most musician's will agree, and come to the same conclusion....Peace Brother.

Exactly. There is a best though, its just different for each individual. As you said thats where opinion comes in.

Although technically the bet would be the gutarest who most people like most.

Symbiosis 10-30-2007 07:15 PM

I voted other.

"Evil" Chuck Schuldiner (RIP) of Death. He in my opinion was a great technical guitarist.

dead 10-30-2007 07:43 PM

Eddie Hazel anyone? Geesh.

Ok, he only really played one mega awesome song, Maggot Brain, but it was awesome enough.

I voted other.

Schuldiner is one of the greatest guitarists ever IMO.

Forgotten Boy 10-30-2007 08:39 PM

LOL @ Kurt Cobain being included. Im a massive Nirvana fan, but he's no Hendrix.

He was considered great for rhythm guitar, thats in a different boat than hendrix

Not entirely. I've always thought Hendrix was halfway between lead and rhythm. He had a way of blending the two quite well.

I meant to say that he isn't nearly as technically skilled as most of the other guitarists in the poll.

Wayfarer 10-31-2007 07:40 AM

Don't have to be technically skilled to be a great guitar player.

MURDER JUNKIE 10-31-2007 10:52 AM

The correct answer is Prince

Is this some sort of Joke? You can like the death of music formally known as nirvanna if you want, but he sucked at guitar. I have a live recording of him playing heartbreaker (the zeppelin song not any of the 80s ones) live and he plays the solo and messes up constantly. His riffs are so simplistic they spawn Green Day and a variety of other bands that are so simple it kills anyone who doesn't wish to listen to a 1 4 5 (yeah yeah sometimes 1 4 5 4 or 1 4 5 1 4) chord progression over and over again. Niccilo Paganini played the guitar so even though I can't listen to him I trust that he was the best guitarist who ever liver as he was the best violinist who ever lived. As for people that I hear. Catchiest is Tom Morello. Fastest is MAB. Overall I would say Jimmy Page.

sleepy jack 11-01-2007 02:04 AM

I'd consider The Ramones guilty of spawning Green Day, not Nirvana and what's wrong with being simplistic?

Nothing is wrong with being simple. But it sure as hell doesn't make you the greatest guitarist. If Johnny Ramone spawned Greenday (and a variety of other music) then why does it start essientially right after Nirvana. Green Day becomes popular about 1994 that's the exact year Nirvana ends. Of course Green Day is influenced by the Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash and I'm sure many other Punk bands, but Nirvana popularized the ultra simple music.

If you ignore the likes of Motley Crue in the early 80s who were influenced by punk & glam rock and sold a few million albums.

Blues pioneers of the early 20's popularized the ultra simple music, actually.
