Jimi Hendrix or Kurt Cobain  |

Quote:

what about jimi page
|
hendrix was better. i like kurts music better but hendrix was a better guitarist.

hendrix had more skill but cobain had better songs. |
my brother has a sweat shirt of hendrix its pretty kool
|
The GREATEST is definately Hendrix.
The BEST is Dimebag. Just to clear things up, Cobain sucks at guitar, and songwriting, and most things for that matter. |

Daron from SOAD is not the greatest guitarist but he has been able to think of some cool riffs.

I think Richie Sambora or Joey Tempest I think its out of them two...

Kurt Cobain is a terrible guitarist. Influential yes, but only because he influenced all music to steadily decline afterwords.
You guys are also talking about really popular, generic favorites for best guitarists. I don't even suppose that this could even turn into a Clapton argumant from the looks of the posters. I would up on the top for Rock guitar(yes, it does include some regular favorites, but I feel they're deserving of thier rank) Frank Zappa Eddie Hazel Robbie Robertson Jeff Beck Eric Clapton John McLaughlin Mike Keneally Jimmy Page |

Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin or Mike Stern. Awesome jazz-guitarists with good eye for harmonics and melody.

Anyone who thinks Dimebag is the best or even close to being the best is simply dilusional, i consider being the best a matter of technical skill, in contrast to being the greatest, which is more about importance and influence...Dimebag is not the best, he isnt one of the top 10 best, he isnt one of the top 20 best and he isnt one of the top 50 best, that is not a opinion but a standard fact, and if he hadnt died most of you probably wouldnt carry on as much, so he gets the symphathy vote...Sure the guy was a hell of a player, im a big pantera fan...But if we are talking about the best players, as in ALL PLAYERS, not just rock players but players of all genres, then Darrel would not even be close to the top, i could name a wide variety of more skilled players from rock, jazz, blues, country, flamenco and beyond.
But if we are talking about greatness, technical skill has little importance...At least when looking at the grand scheme of things. Impact and Influence is a lot more important in that regard. |
I think that if all of you watched led zeppelin perform live, the majority of you would have a hell of a lot of respect for jimmy page, just like i did when i first discovered zeppelin.
|
I think Jimmy Page is a VERY overrated guitar player...not that he isnt good but it isnt like he was some revolutionary....he did the same shit that all others were doing.....im in no way saying he isnt good but he is mos def not the best
I think someone like Robert Cray or Eric johnson....maybe beck, could be considered the best [quote=Uke] I think the greatest would be either Jimi Hendrix or Kurt Cobain[/qoute] tell me your joking about the Kurt Cobain part.....please, DISCLAIMER:Im not bashing Kurt Cobain or Nirvana, i'm simply saying that there is no way in HELL that Kurt Cobain is the Greatest guitarest EDIT: why aint the quote workin??? |
What About Santana? or Jimmy Page? I think they are some of best among Jimi Hendrix

he did the same **** that all others were doing..... Written by BungalowBill
Name some other people who would play their guitars with a violin thing at shows |
He may have played his guitar with a violin bow sometimes, but his defing style wasn't that he used a violin bow
|
True....But his style was very different in my opinion
|
pentatonic scales is different.......
|
No......Those werent his Riffs.so shut up
|
ok....let me re-phrase......12 bar blues and power chords are different.
And you don't have to tell me to shut up simply because I'm disagreeing with you. Its childish. Me disagreeing with you is in no way an attempt to offend you. |
Alright....But we can now agree to disagree........I dont think that the riffs he wrote were at all like anything at the time.......And maybe you've only heard the occasional song where they were somewhat simple
|
I own Led Zeppelin I, II, and III, Best of the Early Days, and How the West was Won. I think I've heard more than the occasional song.
Agree to Disagree |
Alright

And what does Pentatonic Scales have to do with anything?... Page uses pentatonics most of the time, so does Hendrix, Clapton, EVH, Gilmour and Berry... And i'll tell you why, because it sounds good, which is why its a common scale in many genres of music, and dispite what some of you might think, good music isnt defined by how technicaly dificult it is to play, but how it sounds, and thats all that matters, a guitarists job is to complement the music in the best way he or she can. And if you think that Page is a one trick pony, you are wrong, and if you think that he only plays pentatonics and in 4/4 time, you are even wronger...Four Sticks is in 5/4, The Crunge is in 9/4 and Black Dog shifts between, 3/4, 4/4 and 5/4...You dont hear time sigs and tempo changes like those very often... So please do not speak of which you do not know. |
^Just curious but what difference does a 4/4 time sig. and a 6/4 time sig. have?
