Have listened to nearly all the albums that were recommended and got to say the metalcore suff (Converge, Botch and early Norma Jean etc) is far better than the melodic metalcore material in terms of quality. Still haven`t changed my overall opinion about melodic metalcore sounding like a watered down version of the Swedish death metal scene infused with a bit of punk...but even then there are some decent albums.

Best band without a doubt though are Between the Buried and Me and all their releases are quality and really like "Alaska" but "Colors" what an album!!! It now goes down for me as one of the best albums of the 00's.

Amen! BTBAM is so unique in their sound, no one quite sounds like them. I also appreciate how no one in the band really goes out of their way to showcase their virtuoso ability, they just play their music as a team would in a sport. The new EP "The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues" is really damn good too if you haven't checked it out.

I am really drawn to melody in my music. That's part of the reason why I enjoy melodic death metal, the guitar melodies coupled with the harsh vocals are a dynamic that defines that genre to me. Melodic metalcore to me brings a new dynamic to the table, clean vocals. Yes, there are clean vocals in newer In Flames stuff but there isn't as much emphasis as there is in say a Howard Jones or Phil Labonte song. That's not to say the mathcore-esque bands of the late 90's and early 00's aren't solid. I have recanted on what I said previously about Norma Jean, I may not love them, but I can respect what they do.

I am curious to learn more about legitimate hardcore however. You seemed to have a knowledge of it as demonstrated by your thread in the punk forum. I'm pretty ignorant of the genre but I do like what little Earth Crisis I have heard. If you could PM me some recommendations, it'd be much appreciated!

I knew what you meant, but the band does not have radio friendly sound. AILD has no chance of popping up on the radio. The only metalcore bands mentioned that have a radio friendly sound is KSE and ATR, and that is only for their singles (and certainly not with KSE's first album). The only thing that would indicate that these bands are any weaker is that they use clean vocals, and that is simply a preference issue, not a problem with the music.

Totally this! I love BTBAM. They're also the first band I ever moshed to, so they have my soul for that too. They're just so different. I can't listen to Colors in bits and pieces, I have to listen to the whole thing in one sitting. It's an experience. Them, Mastodon, and Baroness are the only metalcore that I really listen to anymore.

Mastodon and Baroness are NWOAM bands sure, but idk where you would find a "core" element in their sound.

Disagreed, I think they're becoming more and more of a southern/sludgy hardcore band. I think it's cause Keith sings way lower now and NJA is their most 'metal' album.

Except they're from Buffalo, which is as Yankee as possible without being Canadian. Posers.
