Speaking of that your new stance on prog completely contradicts everything you said in this thread. http://www.musicbanter.com/rock-meta...iscussion.html

If thats true, then what makes Dream Theater prog? What have they done that 70s prog bands haven't done better?

Besides wanking.

Being prog and being progressive isn't the same thing.

For example, Aphex Twin is progressive, but hes not prog.

You've called them prog-metal quite a bit.

Saying keyboards are a hallmark of prog isn't contradicting myself at all. I call them prog-metal because they're widely accepted as such.

ya we all know those great bands came out of the 80s but that's not what the masses know at all. you can't just disregard all the crap that was prominent in the 80s just because of a few influential artists.

however, i WILL stand corrected in not giving enough credit to the 80s for birthing many popular-to-be genres, and i think that you CAN disregard a couple crappy genres in a decade if a bunch of great ones were spawned

I'm ignorant?

I'm not the one claiming electronica, hip hop and post punk have stagnated.
I'm not the one claiming the past has nothing to do with Prog.

Fact is, every present day genre owes itself to the past, whether we like it or not.

To say post punk (for example) has stagnated, despite the amount of bands out there that are clearly influenced by the genre and then follow that up with the "prog has nothing to do with the past" comment, is preposterous.

We would not have modern music without classical, no ****. Progressive means to move away from the past. What was prog back in the day is not prog now, what is prog now won't be in an equal amount of time.

Those genres really left no room for change, that is why they have stagnated. Tell me of one Post Punk band that is not a clone of Joy Division. Tell me of one electronica DJ that does not play the same mixes from years ago. Tell me how hip-hop is even in the running?

Most post-punk bands sound nothing like Joy Division. Erase Errata is a current post-punk band, and they're much more indebted to the NYC no-wave scene but they're still pretty unique.
