I absolutely loathe Death Metal, and all closely related genres of Metal associated with it. But that is not why I am posting in this topic. I simply have 1 question: Why do they pick such ugly and immature/stupid names? Band names such as Dying Fetus and Carcass seem nothing more than shock value, and it just ends up being rather immature. I mean seriously, what kind of a name is Dying Fetus? That's so incredibly stupid... Couldn't these bands be a little more inventive than that?

Let me get this straight, you are asking why a genre of music that is called Death Metal includes a lot of bands with ugly and shocking names? Does this question really need to be asked?

Next question: Why do so many gansta rappers have names that sounds like gangbangers? Hmmm... puzzling.

Carcass were on an episode of red dwarf once.

Well it's more a question of why they think it's cool to name themselves that. Like what makes them want to name themselves that?

I think you may have missed what I was getting at with my post. Being shocking and brutal is pretty central to what death metal is about as a genre, the names reflect that. That's all there is to it. Look at bluegrass: Why do bluegrass bands have names like the Foggy Mountain Boys? Because a name like that relates to the kind of rural, downhome image most bluegrass bands try to project. Same kind of deal with death metal except in that case they are trying to project an image of horror and brutality.

Yeah I see what you're saying, and it makes perfect sense. I just don't see what is appealing about a genre of music that glorifies death and torture and Satanist gibberish...

Do you like horror movies? It's just the musical equivalent of horror movies. I'm sure most of the musicians don't take it particularly seriously and neither do most of the fans.

You've gotta have an open mind to enjoy/understand it.

I just like how fast and harsh it is. It was a step up in aggressiveness from what I was listening to in my youth and the progression was more than welcome. However, death metal is capable of having very poetic lyrics with rich imagery. Check this out.

Teetotaciously rent corporeal shells
And now our blood and grue is self-exuded
For from Icarian heights we fell
