You get the best of both worlds. Thrashy rhythm work and riffs coming from the best rhythm guitarist around, good melodic solos, insightful lyrics awesome vocals without the cheesiness etc...

Oh, and they're influenced by Iron Maiden which makes them even better .

Yeah, I have Night of the Stormrider and I really like it so I'm sure I will be getting more IE albums soon. What albums are the best ?
Maiden are brilliant too

Thats awesome your getting into Iced Earth, spread the word about this amazing, and absolutly underrated band!
Deimos is a local band, you should check out thier myspace, they have 4 great songs on thier.
I agree that Iced Earth are amazing and underrated and i will definitely look out for the live BG CD

I'd say Burnt Offerings is the next IE album you should get. Alive in Athens is one the best live albums I've ever heard, so you might want to get that after Burnt Offerings.

I'm not huge on power metal, but Blind Guardian is great - you should definitely get some of that.

However in any conversation about BG and IE, it should be noted that Hansi Kursch (BG vocalist) and Jon Schaffer (IE rhythm guitarist/songwriter) collaborated with some other great musicians to form Demons & Wizards. And their self titled album is definitely worth getting - it's musicgasmic.

Agreed. Demons and Wizards rock, although i like Touched By The Crimson King (which features a badass cover of The Immagrant Song) better than self titled.
Burnt Offerings is a great reccomdantion. Its my second fav Iced Earth cd (NOTS) featuring awesome tracks like Burnt Offerings, Last December, and the truly amazing 16:26 epic that is "Dantes Inferno"

It also is the first cd featuring vocalist Matthew Barlow, The best vocalist of all time!

I only really like Alex Skolnick's leads more than the overall sound of the band

my favourite of similar-sounding bands is probably Sacred Reich

I will still never forget the first time I heard the album The New Order and that mellow breakdown in the first track comes in. Still holds up really well and reminds me of my youth.

Can't stand them now though. Last couple of albums sucked for me
