Based completely on personal preference and not in order, 5 old and 5 new, ignoring metal:

* Red Hot Chili Peppers
* Rage Against the Machine
* Joe Satriani (eek, can that count?)
* Incubus
* Primus
* Led Zeppelin
* Queen
* Creedence Clearwater revival
* The Eagles
* Jimi Hendrix Experience

Kashmir created the unbiased list, so I get to create the biased one

If that be the case, i would replace Crosby, Stills and Nash with Black Sabbath.

I don't know they had quite a bit of influence during their time, especially when it comes to musical protest. Look at ohio, I know young wrote the lyrics but the 4 of them recorded it, and it was so powerful that many radio stations banned it at the time. Not only were they influential, they were original in my book, sure there was always bob dylan, but csn was so much more well rounded, with better guitar, better quality vocals and such. I think they were revolutionary in terms of both folk rock and musical protest...

1. ACDC - They had the sound, the image, the talent. Party Starters.

2. Red Hot Chili Peppers - One of the greats for modern music. Thanks to them for being an enduring wonder over nearly the last two decades.

3. Pink Floyd - Easily one of the most influential. So original and entrancing.

4. Led Zeppelin - Where would music be without them? Manowar would be our heroes.

5. Nirvana - Decomposed all the damn pc barriers of the early 90's, highly influential.

6. Rage Against The Machine - Woopy, not that diverse in their career, but why change a winning formula. Great material. Crowd Pleasers.

7. Guns N Roses - Violence like rock had never seen. Axl may be a prick but he and the band make awesome timeless music.

8. Pantera - Same reason RATM is on my list. A complete package.

9. Queen - Timeless music. They will Rock You. Freddie is a legend also, very influential.

10. Tool - So shoot me, 3/4 of the world hates them or doesn't know them. But the level of thought is second to none, live performances are immaculate, and they are a champion band, not a band of champions.

No particular order for the above.

Very very nice. I listen to loads of music - metal, rock, jazz, classical, funk, electronica... mainstream catchy, quirky progressive. My fav bands list is full of metal bands. But RHCP is still my favourite artist/band ever in any genre. Definitely a wonder.
