The Official Black Sabbath Thread

There are a few Sabbath themed threads out there but nothing wholly dedicated to one of my favourite bands.

1969-1978
http://mog.com/pictures/wikipedia/43...bbath1970a.jpg

The era.. Their stripped down blues influenced simplicity was arguably THE template for most Heavy Metal bands. The album 'Paranoid' was recorded onto 4 track and still sounds ridiculously brilliant. The debut is still filled with some of the most iconic riffs laid down. 'Master Of Reality' contains probably THE earliest thrash riff with 'Into The Void'. Stoner/sludge/doom music used 'Vol 4' as it's defining starting point. The brilliant juxtaposition of 'Sympton Of The Universe' (fast riffing segueing into acoustic jamming) from 'Sabotage' influenced many metal bands with ambient tendencies and even 'Never Say Die' had the brilliant bass lead 'Juniors Eyes'.

1979-1982

http://dmme.net/pix/interviews/dio3.jpg

For sure the little tykes lyrics are bombastic and full of the cliches that are now a mainstay of many metal bands but Ronnie James Dio lent a direction and cohesion to the Sabbath sound. 'Heaven And Hell' is a prototype for 80's metal. 'Lonely Is The Word' is the perfect hands in the air slow builder. 'Falling Off The Edge Of The World' from 'Mob Rules' is one of the most perfectly composed Metal tracks ever put down.

1983 and beyond.

http://www.zumablog.com/images/120/BlackSabbath2.jpg

They lost their way when Dio left and the album 'Born Again' with Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) is a hotchpot of ideas, although 'Zero The Hero' has an absolutely monstrous riff. Gillan left, band split. Record company leant on Iommi to use the name on a solo album (86). Vocalists came and went. Reunion's, One Off gigs and sporadic releases ensued over the next 20 years. The music never ever reached the peak of the 70's but 'Eternal Idol', 'Headless Cross' (amazing title track) and 'Tyr' are perfectly decent albums that deserve a run out once in a while.

So let's have some chat. Worst album? Least liked vocalist? How influential do you think they are?

jackhammer 07-23-2008 05:12 PM

Do you know why Sabbath are so fucking good? because they did'nt have a clue what they were doing (Iommi's words!) thus their music sounded like no one else at the time. Drums, Bass, Guitars and Vocals. When Sabbath kept it to this bare minimun they were the best band on the planet. Simple and utterly effective.

<3_BEAUTIFUL_HELL_FAIRY_<3 07-26-2008 02:34 PM

I remember listening to them when i was little.... I have been listening to war pigs by them alot lately.... I don't know alot of their songs but I think I will download some and listen to it....

*goes and find more black sabbath music to listen too*

:thumb: yay good music!!!!

Black Sabbath are easily one of the best rock bands and are "The Beatles" of heavy metal. I personally am only a fan of the first 7 records because after Ozzy left they were total **** and did nothing new.

The Unfan 07-26-2008 03:27 PM

One of the best bands to ever exist.

Son of JayJamJah 07-26-2008 03:34 PM

Absolutely no offense to Ozzy or Tommi or any of the band but if this group had one great song writer they could have surpassed everyone with the exception of the Beatles maybe and ushered in the metal age 10 years sooner then it's finally came.

I loved Paranoid as a kid, it came out right as my balls dropped and I can't help thinking that was more then coincidence.

Sometimes is it not about surpassing but merely being consistent at what they do. Sabbath (by their own admission) were a bunch of Toerags from Brum who could barely play a note between them, yet they became possibly THE quintessential Metal band. Coincidentally another band from Brum also had a massive bearing on Metal and that was Judas Priest. The whole image and direction that Priest gave us is exactly the reason why Metal became a laughing stock and one of the reasons why I shaved my head and ditched my leathers. HOWEVER 'Sad Wings Of Destiny' deserves serious re-appraisal and is one of the best Metal albums ever recorded.

I like Sabbath because people completely laugh at them now. Just think: when was the last time Ozzy was portrayed as anything more than an ex(?)-addict? That's not the way it always was. Nearly all of the Ozzy years were characterized by GOOD albums, something that not too many metal acts could hope to achieve. Yeah, he's probably tipping the bucket now, but that doesn't lessen my respect for what he accomplished with what today remains an unquestionable mainstay of modern metal.

Inuzuka Skysword 07-27-2008 06:37 AM

I have a question...

Was there anything good and original during the Dio years?

boo boo 07-27-2008 11:15 AM

I don't even want to try and find out.

Heaven and Hell was slicked up and polished way beyond recognition, but still very good. Dio>Ozzy.

Inuzuka Skysword 07-27-2008 03:49 PM

You don't belong in this thread because of the statement you just made.

DO YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU JUST SAID

Witsh? 07-27-2008 06:46 PM

Black Sabbath = orgasmic. That's all I can say =\

Agreed.

Dr_Rez 04-26-2010 12:30 AM

Why are this bands first five albums untouchable? Is it true that the self titled was done in there home studio with about 500 bucks cash? If so thats a ****ing kick in the nuts to bastardly companies like Protools

Who laughs at them?? And Ozzy... hes still hosting Ozest every year, putting out albums, training amazing little Zak Wyldes and Randy Rhodes and not to mention being looked up to by every self proclaimed metal band on the planet.

Dont get me started on Iommi. That mans just incredible, he doesnt have have all his fingers due to a factory accident. Listened to this jazz guitarist and continued playing guitar because of it and is now one of the most brilliant Rock and Roll guitarists ever.

I think even if someone mocks them for some reason they know that Sabbath is responsible for a good deal of wha they probably like coming out today.

SHAMELESS DOUBle POST.

Listen to them in the context of their time and there is practically nothing like them out there, nearly every riff on those albums has been copied, altered, slowed down and speeded up by a multitude of metal bands since (Who aknowledge the fact as well) The template for thrash and doom metal etc are all laid down on these albums. For most metal fans those first five albums are the stuff of legend.

because CDs made it way WAY easier for almost everyone to conveniently forget that this is on Volume 4.

Dr_Rez 04-27-2010 08:22 PM

That made me lol ^

"I'm goooing through changes...."

Makes me want to throw up on myself every time that turd interrupts the rest of Vol. 4. Seriously, what the hell were they thinking?

"Wheels of Confusion" is actually my favorite Sabbath tune, so I have to put up with that song every now and then when I listen to that album.

duga 04-27-2010 08:53 PM

Maybe it is just because I can compare it to most of Ozzy's solo output, but I actually don't mind Changes.

I do, however, mind it when Kelly tried singing it.

My problem with it is that it is just so.. un-Sabbath like. Know what I mean? I don't listen to them to hear cheesy break up songs.

Otherwise I probably wouldn't mind either.

Yeah, I can totally understand that. It is a bit jarring every time I hear it...takes me a moment or two to adjust. But I try not to let it ruin a near flawless album.

Odyshape 04-27-2010 09:26 PM

Anyone else think Technical Ecstasy doesn't get the respect it deserves? I always see bad reviews for it.

Personally, I always thought it to be a load of rubbish or at best very average. I last listened to it some years ago now..............probably give it another twirl sometime soon and I might have a different opinion about it.

i hear ya. the rest of the disc is all killer aside from the FX filler, which isn't nearly as bad as 'Changes' but still quite unnecessary.

then again you can hear someone saying '....cccooooCCCCAaaaaiiiiinnnnneee...' in the background to Snowblind so that might explain a bit of why Changes ended up on the disc.

Now that you come to mention it. I don't think I ever listened to it.

Technical Ecstasy is a pretty poor album unfortunately but saying that Never say Die is not all that BUT this track is one of my 2nd tier faves:

My first choice but the audio was bad on youtube! love that bassline.

boo boo 04-28-2010 06:25 PM

I haven't heard Technical Ecstasy but am I right to assume that that cover is supposed to depict two machines f*cking on an escalator?

snagglepuss 05-02-2010 08:25 PM

I was listening to Hole In The Sky the other day and I love how the song gets groovy and light about 3-4 minutes before the end.

Dr_Rez 07-18-2010 08:36 PM

Does anyone know if Sabbath will be playing any more shows?

ps Ozfest is going to be great this summer.

Shampoo 07-20-2010 08:30 PM

I love Sabbath. Their first six albums are just perfection.

I still remember the first time I heard Sweet Leaf. That riff, oh, that riff! It changed my life. :)

Yep.

Very underrated Sabbath record : Rock N' Roll Dr., It's Alright, Dirty Women, Back Street Kids...

Good record.

My fave is prolly still the first one, though.

Totally agree with this, as I was never a fan of his solo career.

Insane Guest 10-29-2010 01:20 PM

As much as I respect Dio, Ozzy's stuff with Black Sabbath was better.
Although Heaven and Hell is classic.
