Since pretty much forever? I don't think so. I mean the New York scene, the San Fran death/thrash, and the Florida scene are obviously famous dm scenes in the US, and then you also have tons of bands scattered throughout the country, but in the early days of death metal, Europe is at least on par with the US. Of course the US had Possessed, Death, Morpheus Descends, and Necrophagia, but Sweden had Nihilist, Carnage, Dismember, Unleashed, and Entombed alone. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but, in the beginning, dm had awesome showings in both areas.

Today, it's really unclear. Sweden has bands like Kaamos and Necrovation, while the US holds bands like Arghoslent and Deathevokation. While obviously these aren't the only good bands in each scene, both scenes are dishing out quality dm, even if both areas contain mostly garbage. It also depends on if you're a fan of the brutal dm thats becoming so prominent in the US's scene...
Most of the extreme metal I listen to nowadays is European. European extreme metal has a tendency to migrate towards textural arrangements rather than the lyrical/vocal attack of American stuff.

I don't know what the f*ck I'm doing here. I may have listened to five black metal albums in my entire life...

I hope one of them was Windir's Arntor.

Might be time to give that thread another shameless bump.

Outside of Sigh I haven't really heard much Japanese black metal. They have some great black/thrash though like Abigail, Barbatos, and Sabbat. Truly bestial, maniacal stuff.

The french scene is an interesting one, in my opinion. There are some top notch acts like Peste Noire, Vlad Tepes, Mutiilation, and Seviss. They also seem to have their fair share of garbage. From the norse rip offs to the bands emulating this "Orthodox" sound that has become so popular in Sweden.

Wait.... there's US Black Metal? I thought US was responsible for the world's supply of metalcore and pop.

Seriously, I haven't heard of any black metal bands from the US. And if I did, I probably wouldn't know it.

I'd have to pick Norwegian Black Metal.

Black metal is a really beautiful genre (yes, beautiful!) a lot of people take it the wrong way though I think, sure, the whole "gr1m" thing is pretty hilarious... But the way I see black metal is that it's supposed to embrace the beauty of the darker things in life and even nature. :D

On another note I chose Norwegian black metal, simply because it's just... awesome. US black metal is okay but I find that a lot of them are "suicidal black metal" (wtf?).

Also agree with Terrible Lizard that a lot of great black metal comes from France. =)

i think you have to take into account that musicians on both sides of the water are following different traditions.

also people if you are going to go with the cliche choice of Norwegian BM pick a better band than satyricon. ultimately its better just to listen to the quality bands from either nation. personaly i think Canada or Finland has better Black metal than either Norway or the US.

I haven't been into black metal for very long, but with some research, most of it is European although there are some good US ones too. Poland also has a good amount, I subscribed to a channel on youtube called AbyssPL and he has amazing stuff.

Arckanum, Quaet Gespuys, Cor Scorpii, Taran, Judas Iscariot, Wolves in the Throne Room, Vulva Infernum, Kult, Infestus, Khrom, Furia, Mgła, Corpus Christii, Horna, Godless North, Arctic Circle, Kult of Azazel, Szron, Ctulu, Hellspawn, Impaled Nazarene, Morbosidad, Craft, Urgehal, Gholgoth, Harmony Dies, Ancient, The Legion, Summon, Tsjuder.
