Are you familiar with Sons of Otis? They might be kind what you'e looking for.

I'm likin' it. It doesn't quite fit what I'm looking for. Good on ya' though.

Of course It isn't the first time I've heard the style I'm looking for. Buddy Guy's Sweet Tea album is a prime example. I think I'm just tryong to find something a little slower, if not heavier.

Aabsinthe 12-10-2011 04:11 PM

Hey. Can someone recommend good music group from 21 century whose sound is somewhat similar to bands like The Doors , The smiths (first album) , Television , Nirvana, David Bowie, Talking Heads (first album ) ? :)
Thanks

Chikablam 12-21-2011 04:38 PM

Looking for some decent prog metal/rock if anyone has any suggestions

Above 12-21-2011 07:59 PM

Looking for something progressive and unique. It has to have teeth if you know what I mean.

that is such, like, a wide umbrella

can you narrow it down by naming bands you like, with youtubes, if possible?

I have here something very unique, but also very indie and lo-fi.

Above 12-22-2011 01:37 PM

Ew, no thanks.

Lo fi indie from Canada. Sounds like a clown falling down the stairs and landing on a dog.

Why did you even post that video? It's nothing LIKE what I asked for. You're really scraping the bottom of the barrel for attention seeking techniques now.

You're both as guilty as each other at desperately trying to get over. Just chill.
And perhaps you'd like Harmonium, Above?

Well, I just thought that "progressive and unique..with teeth" would encompass a gigantic amount of music. And I think that last song was pretty progressive (possibly "regressive" actually) and very unique.

If you want some older and less creepy stuff I'll assume you mean innovative and with a bit of a harsh edge to it.

I'm going to suggest Yes, but this starting at the very top:

Howard the Duck 12-23-2011 04:17 AM

^^c'mon, that's just a pop song

(but a very good one at that)

I put it in because it's still progressive.

And if you want to get interested in Yes, then this is the easiest song to start with.

It's a bit progressive, yeh?

Howard the Duck 12-23-2011 04:38 AM

nope, totally pop-rock

i would suggest Yes' "Yours is No Disgrace" - prog but yet still quite accessible

No problem, you do know a lot more about this than me:

(I still think everything Yes did was prog!!!)

Howard the Duck 12-23-2011 04:49 AM

Big Generator and 90125 were basically pop albums

Trevor Rabin wrote most of both, not Yes themselves

they were called Yes-West at this point

Opeth and Ihsahn would be pretty big players on my iPod

As Il Duce said, this is not really Yes, its just mostly Trevor Rabin who gave the band an early 1980s facelift.

Yeah, sorry, I was just trying to find a song they performed which had "a bite", and that was honestly the best I could come up with!

Welcome back by the way!

Well, enough to hopefully tell Batlord what an awful job he's doing of the Metal Wars thread! I can't believe it.

Anyway, I've been enjoying a bit of Helloween at your recommendation:

Just so awesome.

have you heard Tool?

not exactly similar but kinda same vibe

Death's "Symbolic", "Human" and "Individual Though Patterns" are prog-death

Any Tool albums to recommend?

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 12-24-2011 06:18 PM

Dark Tranquility might be up your alley, albeit I don't consider it prog.

Electrophonic Tonic 12-24-2011 07:19 PM

Did someone say prog metal? Opeth is definitely on the right track. I would also recommend...

If you're looking for jazzier metal...

I know Mahavishnu isn't exactly metal, but they're damn close and may as well be metal for the early 70's.

Dr. Acula and See You Next Tuesday are similar, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Above 01-02-2012 09:40 AM

I want some really fast, energetic rock music, preferably instrumental, in the same vein as this:

It doesn't have to be rockabilly. I just want the same mood and energy as this song.

Cool, I'm digging See You Next Tuesday's Parasite, but Dr. Acula is a bit weaker IMO. Thanks for the rec.

Jaaz 01-08-2012 05:23 PM

If you like riffs like Sabbath, and are bored of growling/screaming vocals, I'd recommend checking out Priestess. They're not a huge band and only have a couple of albums, but they kick ASS. One of my TOP favorite newer bands.

since I'm new and can't post links, I'd suggest checking out "Lay Down", "It Baffles the Mind" and "Trapped in Space and time".

Paudyyy 01-10-2012 11:43 AM

Industrial Metal suggestions?

Realy into this genre of metal but I'm struggling to find many bands similiar to artists I like!

I've been listening to a lot of Sybreed and Devin Townsend etc

LoathsomePete 01-10-2012 11:51 AM

Have you tried the band Fear Factory? They're one of the closer bands to Devin's SYL in the sense that they sometimes use samples but largely consist of pulsating chugging metal. Their 1995 album Demanufacture is one of their better albums, but anything from 2005 on wards is just as good.

You may also want to try Killing Joke's 1994 album Pandemonium (Fear Factory actually did a cover of one of the songs off that album). Killing Joke aren't the heaviest band, but their influence is felt all throughout the metal/ rock community.

KMS 01-21-2012 11:26 PM

Alcest's latest album 'Les Voyages De L'Âme' is going to be difficult to top for 2012.
