I'll check those out, any more?

Slayer- Seasons in the Abyss Slayer- South of Heaven Metallica- Ride the Lightning Metallica- ...and Justice For All Sepultura- Beneath the Remains Anacrusis- Screams and Whispers Testament- The New Order Sodom- Agent Orange Overkill- Horrorscope Now surely along with what has been suggested this is enough!:yikes: Bear in mind all the groups mentioned are fairly old and some of their other releases have evolved out of thrash into other types of metal. I would like to recommend some modern day thrash groups but imo all that I`ve heard are pretty weak. |
thrash to check out:
Morbid Saint - Spectrum of Death Artillery - By Inheritance Kreator - Pleasure to Kill Sodom - Persecution Mania Dark Angel - Darkness Descends Forbidden - Forbidden Evil Demolition Hammer - Epidemic of Violence Sadus - Swallowed In Black |
Lol trash :P
Thanks, I've already heard Pleasure and Persecution, but I'll check out the rest. |
I especially recommend that Morbid Saint record. One of my favorites in the world of Thrash.

Still a great album and as good a place as any to start with such a quality band.

Alright so I've been looking to pick up some rock albums that will in short, "blow my mind" by how good they are.
I'm missing alot of essentials when it comes to rock still and these are the ones that people have recommended me or told me will blow my mind. The Who - I don't own any Who cds, although I enjoy what I have heard. I've been told that "The Who Sell Out!" is one of their best and a good place to start, and I also have been told that "Live At Leeds" is great. I have heard though that only the deluxe edition of Live At Leeds has the whole show, so should I go with that one? Or should I get something different by The Who completely? The Rolling Stones - I own Sticky Fingers and Exile and enjoy them both, but I'm not sure what else by them will "blow my mind." I've been told that "Let It Bleed" and "Beggar's Banquet" are pretty good, but what year (mastering/issue) should I get? Deep Purple - Don't own anything by them, but have been told that "Machine Head" and "In Rock" are both great. Stevie Ray Vaughan - I know he's not really rock, but I only on "Texas Flood." Is anything else he's done essential? Jimi Hendrix - I don't own a single thing by him. Anything a must have? Prog - I am ignorant on this whole genre. I can't think of a single prog album I own, save for four Pink Floyd ones. Is anything from that essential listening? Southern Rock -Again, I still haven't decided what to pick up from this genre. If I were to have only one album though, what one by what band should I get? Out of all this, what should I get first? (i.e. What is the most essential?) (P.S.- It's a good thing I've got you guys here to help me expand my horizons!) Do you guys have any other ideas? |
Quote:
Prog again huge but the essentials are: Yes "The Yes Album" and "Close to the Edge" King Crimson "In the Court of the Crimson King" "Red" Genesis "Selling England By The Pound" Jethro Tull "Aqualung" Rush "2112" "A Farewell to Kings" Kansas "Leftoverture" "Point of Know Return" Southern Rock pretty much cornered by the Allman Brothers Band Other suggestions: Aerosmith "Toys in the Attic" "Rocks" Styx " The Grand Illusion" "Pieces of Eight" Alice Cooper "Love It to Death" "Killer" "Billion Dollar Babies" and the whole discography of the Doors ....and finally the Cheap Trick debut album, a hard edged mother of an album that sounds like a Beatles or Move record that has gone out of control and still sounds great today. I`m guessing you know Led Zep pretty well and so I won`t mention them. I could mention a multitude of commercial and really obscure stuff, but I don`t know your real tastes. |
What Allman Bros. album is the best in your opinion Unknown? So you think Allman bros are better than Skynyrd?
What year/pressing release should I get of those Hendrix albums? (Which ones do you have) Should I start with EL or AYE? I have The Doors s/t, what album should I get next? Thanks for the help man! |
have to post it:
|
Quote:
You have to start with AYE as EL is fairly dense, its one of those classic double albums that is hard work to get into, but its worth the effort. personally I think its the greatest double ever recorded ahead of other classics like "Physical Graffiti" "White Album" "London Calling" and "Mellon Collie..." Whichever AYE you get make sure its got 17 tracks, as originally it was released without the singles which were released before the album (a common practice in the 60`s was to release singles that were not on the albums) by getting the 17 tracks you`ll get all the singles. After the debut "Strange Days" and "Waiting for the Sun" again some of the greatest albums ever recorded. |

The Rolling Stones - "Let It Bleed" and "Beggar's Banquet" ARE pretty good. Deep Purple - Only have "In Rock", yeah it's great. Jimi Hendrix - Actually, my fave album is Axis : Bold as Love. It has a lot of experimentation yet still keeps the poppiness of the Chas Chandler production. Prog - I suggest Gentle Giant's Octopus and Van Der Graaf Generator's H to He who Am the only One Southern Rock - ZZ Top - Tres Hombres Essentials are the Who, Stones and Hendrix. |
Hey all. I'm really trying to get into vocal surf rock right now, any suggestions? Oldness/newness/scene doesn't matter, as long as you can link the band to surf rock in some way and it has vocals in it.
By the way, I have absolutely nothing against instrumental music. I'm just not in the mood for instrumental surf rock, which honestly seems to all sound quite a lot alike. |

Misc rock that could blow ur head(will include a sample):
Can - Tago Mago Faith No More - Angel Dust Incubus - S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Mr. Bungle - Mr. Bungle Nirvana - Nevermind (just in case you don't know it) Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted Pixies - Doolittle Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze Slint - Spiderland Television - Marquee Moon |
is it possible not to know "Nevermind"?
|
anything's possible, bro.
|
Thanks for the recommendations guys! I've heard most of that misc. rock posted. Love me some Pavement and Faith No More! Still need to check out Slint though.
I think I'm going to get some Stones and Who first though. Or Doors. |
Slint is a great band. "Spiderland" is in my top 10 albums of the 90's. It is a great album, their first album "Tweez" was alright, nowhere near the level of "Spiderland", but still a decent debut (and produced by Steve Albini). A few members from Slint were in the band Squirrel Bait before as well, who were a great band.
If you like Slint, should check out the band June of 44 as well, they have a lot of similarities to them. June of 44 was basically a supergroup, made up of members from Rodan, Hoover, Rex and Lungfish... think also connection to Codeine. This song I have posted, but would fit right in on Slint's "Spiderland" |
My collection is getting extremely dry, and I need some more Metal! I've been trying to find new bands, but I have very little success in finding ones that I like. I am looking something fast, thrash metal is fast, but the bands I tried out I did not like (Accept, Overkill, and some others) the vocals threw me the **** off. I just want metal that's fast, any type is good Power, Death, Black (as long as the vocals aren't as filthy as Obituary or Emperor). Some bands I like right now...Testament, Athiest, Machine Head, Slayer, In Flames (early stuff)...so all recomendations welcome.
|
hmmm...
Thrash: Death Metal: not sure what you will think vocally though... hmm. |
i will add this... you may know it... but hey, can't go wrong with Possessed:
|
Morbid Saint had me headbanging within the first couple of seconds, Sadus was great as well, hope the quality is just because of Youtube and not the quality of the albums, Necrophobic was brutal as ****, without the growls being too over the top. I don know Possesed, they're good, but I can't get into them. Keep the recs. coming if you wouldn't mind (that goes for everyone) : )
|
Yeah, albums sound better. Youtube quality leaves little to be desired.
Morbid Saint is a great band. Other thrash and death metal I like: Thrash: Death: the last song by Miasma is my favorite of these, Death Metal out of Austria of all places. Death Metal is more my style of choice when it comes to metal. Thrash I am not as knowledged in. So many Death Metal bands I would post for ya, but I am not sure if you would like the vocals on some of my favorites. |
ohhhh.. should throw this in as well.... another band you may know... but if not. Check them out. One of my favorite Death Metal bands.
They have never disappointed me. "Considered Dead" and "The Erosion of Sanity" are both essential... as is "Obscura", though that album is a bit more experimental and avant garde, not solid Death Metal... it is like the "Trout Mask Replica" of Death Metal... amazing album if you can get into it, took me a few listens, but once I got into it it became one of my favorite albums off all-time. |
Deicide are a great band. The first three albums are classic, the second (Legion) being my personal favorite and their most complex. Get a proper recording of it; the rhythm section is brilliant on this album.
Blasphemy! Early (late 80s) Canadian Black Metal. Brilliant ****; while Scandinavia went melodic, they went brutal. Incantation. This band has had many, many notable members; Daniel from the Chasm, Rahmer from Mortician, Ledney from Havohej & Profantica, etc. Some people prefer their first album, "Onward to Golgotha", but I think "Diabolical Conquest" has great riffs, melancholy harmonies, and a powerful rhythm section. Watchmaker no longer exist, which is a shame, because they produced albums that were rare for their subgenre, in that they lacked filler. I realize they're pretty extreme, but you said you wanted fast, so.... Siege were around for a long time, but recordings of theirs are hard to come by. Sort of hardcore meets grindcore; Slayer gone punk, Metallica after snorting whiskey. Fast would explain their music quite well. |

Legion is still Deicide's best album. "Once Upon the Cross" feels more comical to me, like a parody of themselves on the first 2, "When Satan Rules His World" is so by the numbers it is hilarious.. but the riff is cool... "Once Upon the Cross" was the first Death Metal album I listened to. Still holds memories for me.
Self-Titled, Legion and The Stench of Redemption are my top 3 personally. "When Satan Lives" is one of my favorite live albums as well. I find Glen Benton to be like a cartoon character. I never can take him seriously. Especially on the post-Legion stuff. Also, "Diabolical Conquest" is my favorite Incantation album as well. |
Can't thank you guys enough. I have some music exploration to attend to, some of these bands I fucking loved (Gorguts, Morbid Saint, Demolition Hammer, Incantation the best out of the bunch.. imo) but some others I can't get myself to like the growls. I'm not one to to say, "I hate that screaming crap" but I do appreciate fine growls, and while Watchmaker is fucking extreme, I just can't find myself listening to that.
I'll be back to ask for some recommendations. |

But, yeah, Benton is an idiot. He used to prattle about how he'd commit suicide at age 33(?) to prove he was the antithesis to Jesus. Of course, though, Euro liberals think he's "serious business", and actually have called multiple bomb threats against Deicide shows because, during an interview at his Florida home, he got out a 22 and shot some squirrels. Just when you think an attention whore vocalist of a Florida D.M. band is King Retard, too.... Quote:

"Serpents of the Light" had some decent stuff on it.... the rest up until "The Stench of Redemption" though got retty bad, especially "In Torment, In Hell"... that album is just awful.
"Dechristianize" is a good album, though I prefer the early Vital Remains stuff more. But "Dechristianize" was some of Glen's best vocals since the heyday of Deicide. The Hoffman brothers are releasing an album this year, under the name Amon, which of course was what Deicide was known as before the self-titled album. Kinda sad they have to use the name of their former band to let people know it is them, but oh well.. I look forward to seeing what they can offer. |
Hey guys, I'm looking for some metal that makes me want to punch someone in the face. Something akin to the chunky riffs of Black Sabbath's "Children of the Grave", "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" and "Fairy's Wear Boots". But I also want it to make me want to punch someone, kind of like The Stooges "Search and Destroy" or Pantera's "Rise."
Oh and no death metal, and preferably I can get it on CD for cheap. (meaning no super obscure metal that would cost me $15 for one cd) |
Sounds like 99% of sludge.
