I've been listening to Chelsea Wolfe lately and wanted to know if anyone had something similar to her reverb soaked creepiness?

Trollheart 09-14-2012 05:45 PM

Getting into Lake of Tears at the moment, wondering if, as Wiki says, this is indeed doom metal (and I'm not at all sure it is, as they also append the subgenre gothic metal) does anyone know of bands similar to them, as I would be interested in exploring?

TVM

Frownland 09-16-2012 10:02 AM

Anyone have any recommendations for some good old avant-garde metal that's heavy on the dissonance?

Trollheart 09-16-2012 10:48 AM

Avant-garde, certainly, metal maybe, dissonance, hmm not sure but have you tried Diablo Swing Orchestra?

Lake of Tears are one of these gothic/doom metal bands. So check out My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Katatonia and Candlemass. This stuff tends to be more varied than straight-up doom metal.

DSO is a great band, those crazy Swedes. I only have that album that you posted though, maybe I'll do a little backtracking into their catalogue. Thanks for the rec!

Could we add instrumental metal band Toundra to that list? I honestly don't know how to classify them. By now, the only certain thing is that their music is absolutely eargasmic to me.

Wait, wait, wait. Am I to assume that you are only just getting into doom metal? Then you should start with these and move on from there. None of these are in any way extreme metal. No growling vocals, and they are closer to Sabbath than anything else, so they shouldn't put you off:

The Youtube tag for this video is "woe_4gkS4XU". That amuses me.

Can i get some suggestions for melodic death metal bands without growls? I know melodic death metal is characterised by growls but if anyone knows some without, let me know thanks. For e.g. i like sabaton's cover of amon amarth's twilight of the thunder gods.

phoenix17 09-22-2012 02:28 AM

Looking for more similar to Periphery.

Uh...I think you're SOL. Why don't you just try thrash? Plenty of good thrash with no growls.

Orchestral Rock suggestions?

Hey there!

I'm looking for some rock music laced with orchestration and/or general epicness.

Here's the catch. I'm getting board of the "Nightwish", "Epica", "Dreamtheater" and "Kamelot" style vocals. How about something with a bit more of a Curt Kobain feel to the vocals? "Silverchair's" song "Emotion Sickness" pretty well describes this. Perhaps toss in some of "Coheed and Cambria's" theatrical pacing and THAT's what I'm looking for.

Got any suggestions?

Thanks!

If you like Opeth you might like Edge of Sanity and Klone. I can't really name a whole lot of progressive death metal bands that play a similar style to Opeth so you might want to try getting into progressive thrash and progressive death metal. Here's a few albums to start you off:

Coroner - Mental Vortex & Grin. It's the most progressive work they have to offer and I think you would enjoy that more than their earlier, more technical work.

Atheist - Elements. Their most progressive album. Like I said about Coroner, it's likely more accessible to you than their earlier technical work.

Cynic - Focus. It's a shame that after this great debut they strayed away from the metal style. Nevertheless, it's a great progressive metal album. Quite an eclectic release, too.

Exivious - Self-titled. Former members of Cynic and Textures got together and made an album. Basically more of Cynic's Focus, just with less synths and the technicality upped 500%

Vektor - Black Future. Some really killer technical/progressive thrash. If you like this, then you might want to try Outer Isolation.

ikvat 10-16-2012 02:12 PM

Trepalium - Insane Architect

Klone - Army of Me

Hi Guys!!! My favorite bands as of now are Phinehas, Conducting from the grave, Synopsis, Of Mice and Men, Memphis May Fire. I love them because they have creativity in writing music that is melodious and seems to be written by humans instead by machines (my humble personal opinion). Please recommend me some more music that ascends its boundaries.

hip hop bunny hop 10-23-2012 04:04 PM

Fellow metalheads,

I propose we take our music sharing to the next level. I propose we make use of Spotify's collaborative playlists. I imagine creating such genre-specific playlists would be fun & informative. I imagine more might come from there, but I think it'd be a good place to start.

Anyone else think this might be fun?

The Batlord 11-07-2012 08:50 AM

So, I'm looking for some modern extreme/extremish metal (90's to now) that isn't death metal or black metal or mathcore or deathcore or any of the usual suspects. I've been loving early Lamb of God, and I'm not looking for something that sounds like that, just modern extreme metal with a sound of it's own. Doesn't have to be the most brutal thing on earth, just has to kick some ass in a non-avant garde kinda way.
