Alright I'm a noob metalhead right now, but I really want to get into some GOOD music. I really like Metallica and Escape The Fate and I recently heard some Opeth so if anyone wants to recommend me some Opeth?
I really like hard, dangerous riffs. Probably more instrumental than singing. I like growling and screaming better, but I HATE screamo/bands with guys who have pop voices and scream. I don't really like scratchy deep voices, I don't really know how to explain that, which is why I lean towards older rock. Any recommendations? |

All of the above are pretty mainstream and theirs a whole load of more obscure or experimental sounding stuff you could get into as well. Another band to look at would be the Melvins a sludge and experimental metal band that were hugely influential on grunge back in the day. Finally Opeth, do you just like the death metal stuff of the mellower stuff they often do? |

Let's say a.. umm.. friend of mine has never listened to Iron Maiden for whatever reason... what album would you reccomend to me.. I mean him.

Maybe you may like also bands Katatonia, Anathema, Pain of Salvation. I love also Tool but it's band on their own - you love it or not, probably nothing between. Some good band with growl and catchy melodies is for example Swallow the sun, maybe Amorphis and Ghost Brigade. Just now I found one band that seems to be my new addiction - Agalloch. Try them. Lot of instrumental parts, little bit of growling. |

Another good place to start is their debut album which is a classic, but its with a different singer Paul DÀnno and its very punk influenced. |

Everyone should listen to them! |

These are Maiden's 4 best IMO. Number of the Beast has some of their most popular stuff but quality wise it isn't in their top 5. |
Ive mentioned this song before..and I like it so well I just have to post the link, I do know that it was on a soundtrack off one of the movie sequels 'The Crow'.
YouTube - Hurt - Rapture |
I'd like to recommend a band called ZeroZonic.
They play music similar to Pantera and Chimaira, a fine mix between groove metal and thrash metal. Seen them live, and a great band with lots of energy. Check them out! ZEROZONIC on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads |
I'm looking for ambient/trance psychedelic music. I've already listened to Shpongle quiet a bit and am wondering if there are any other psybient groups out there that are worth listening to.
|
Now I am completelly fascinated by band Agalloch :)
They are not easy to describe... Mixture of dark metal, neo-folk, post-rock and progressive. Electric and acoustic guitars, sometimes piano. If you like Opeth, you will probably like this band too. |

I especially like the instumentals and the times when the singers *aren't* growling. The growling in songs just feels so impersonal to me, and it makes me stop and think, "Oh yes, the person is growling to show he/she can growl," which distracts me from the emotion behind what is being growled. Since often the growling makes hearing the words difficult, I also feel some animosity toward growling, because I think it makes understanding the music more difficult. I guess I really just prefer people's talking/singing voices...they feel more individual and unique than growling long passages. I agree, though, that what I admire about these two songs by Agalloch is very similar to what I admire about Opeth...the cleanless of the drums, the energy, the changing beat patterns, and the feeling of foreboding and all is not well. |
As I lay dying
or opeth.........lol |
anyone know of any space rock bands, similar in sound to the clean-vocal breaks Between The Buried And Me often incorporates in the middle of some of thier songs?
|
Hibria- pretty sweet power metal group

Yeah I listened to both of them a few years back, they lost touch with me though. I'm not sure As I Lay Dying is capable of writing an album or even a song for that matter that doesn't sound exactly like everything they've ever done. I still listen to Job For a Cowboy every now and then, pretty brutal and it's good when the mood fits. |
Looking for more Rock / Metal that's of a similar style to Inhuman Rampage by Dragonforce. i.e. not too Screamo, and lots of crazy guitar :) Cheers

I`m not sure if it Dragonforce that you like, guitar solos or the power metal sound, if its the latter there is a whole host of other bands to recommend. |

Try some Kamelot, alot similar to Dragonforce on the fantasy, some pretty crazy guitar and drum work. maybe not as intense as Dragonforce, but much better IMO. Also, Stratovarius is a great fantasy metal band with some pretty balls out solo's and guitar work. |
deftones deftones deftonessss!

And So I Watch You From Afar
A really cool (mainly instrumental) Belfast band, they lent their splitter to us when we had a Belfast gig in 2009.Things are picking up for them as they have toured as support with Them Crooked Vultures check them out on YouTube and myspace etc.

Not sure if this is the place to do it, but I was reading the first couple pages of this topic and read about Queens of the Stone Age. I had forgotten I wanted to check them out. I've only heard a couple of their singles, but I really liked what I heard. Which of their albums is a good one to start with?
|

"Rated R" and "Songs for the Deaf" are the two to start with. |
I'm not really sure where else to put this, aside from starting a topic. So in here will do.
I recently started getting more into Silverchair's discography, and I am really quite impressed. Their first album Frogstomp seems to get the most attention for some reason, but Neon Ballroom and Diorama are like, a lot better. Really creative fresh sounding modern rock. Strong lyrics and vocalist, excellent use of an orchestra. Overall stellar instrumentation. Highly recommend you guys check them out if you like some sleeker and more creative sounding post-grunge. |

What albums have you heard? If you're talking about Frogstomp and Freak Show, then yeah, I agree.
Neon Ballroom and Diorama on the other hand... |

Their later albums sound quite a bit different though. It's much more evolved.
|
Eh, Freak Show is the best album they ever did IMO. Slave is their best song.
They evolved in the wrong direction. Their later efforts were scattered and not as focused. Not to mention the personal issues the band suffered after that. |
I dunno, I think their first two are really mundane and generic. Their later stuff is actually refreshing and enjoyable to me.
to each his own though. |
Hi all, I'm a newbie and i am looking for some cool instrumental prog metal or instrumental shred metal recommendations.
I get right into artists like Animals As Leaders, Liquid Tension Experiment, Buckethead (and all the other guitar virtuosos), so am looking for music along similar lines. Please, no vocals and stuff with a sense of melody not just avant garde tripped out ****! Cheers, any recommentdation is appreciated. |
