I have to mention Type O Negative here as well, Sabbath’s definitely been a huge influence for them and in terms of song/album quality they really have to be one of the most consistent bands on the planet. Not sure if I know of any bands similar to Primus at all, though Frizzle Fry is certainly a fantastic album. |

Mercyful Fate and King Diamond’s “solo” work as well though the high pitched falsetto vocals are a hit or miss for most people. I think he’s one of the all time best. For newer stuff maybe Iced Earth, they have an awful lot of Maiden influence. And for something totally random try checking out Viking metal-era Bathory albums, “Hammerheart”, “Twilight of the Gods”, “Blood On Ice” and Nordland 1 and 2. Look up epic in the dictionary and you should see Quorthon’s name. ;) |
i'm diggin the Aussie alternative scene now, like Children Collide, Violent Soho, and The Grates.

Lately I've been listening to alot of Periphery, they are good and heavy, but yet they still have some good catchy stuff, similar to meshuggah in alot of aspects. I also really like Comity from France, they are kind of a neurosis and converge mix. No one really knows of them but they are really good, and their songs are long and interesting.

Well, for now maybe my question will sound stupid little bit... But ok, I will try...
It's question of one my czech friend who is fan of Linkin Park and Paradise Lost. And I try to find some answers for her. Do you know some bands similar to Linkin Park? Or do you know some catchy metal which could be nice for fans of Linkin Park? I mean nothing progressive or complicated. Thanks for some reply. |
Hey there everybody I'm looking to introduce some metal into my music collection. So far I only have the progressive sounds of "Tool" which I love. I know there are a lot of recommendations in this thread already and I am previewing some of the bands mentioned. But if anyone could help me out with bands that are somewhat similar or compliments Tool in a metal band collection I would be grateful.

Well, if you want progressive metal with some interesting lyrics, try band Pain of Salvation. As I know, lot of people like both bands. |

You may also want to try out the Dutch progressive rock/ alt metal band The Gathering, specifically their album How to measure a planet?. Their vocalist at the time, Anneke van Giersbergen, has some of the nicest clean vocals out of all the female singers I know associated with metal. If you're feeling experimental then I would suggest checking out the Swedish avant garde metal band Diablo Swing Orchestra. They mix swing and opera with metal to create a really cool sound. Annlouice Loegdlund has some amazing operatic vocals, however they can get a little grating if you're not into that kind of style. If that's the case then I would advise staying away from the 2006 release The Butcher's Ballroom because it was very heavy on the opera styled vocals. Their 2009 follow up Swing Along Songs for the Damned and Delirious addressed that issue and toned down the higher pitched vibratos and added a lot more of a heavy guitar sound very similar to Meshuggah's sound. Here's an example from their sophomore album: As far as bands similar to the other bands you mentioned... it's been so long since I've heard anything by any of those bands that I don't know if I could really recommend something along those lines, but I do have a recommendation if you like Disturbed. The Seattle band Nevermore is a great place to go if you're after heavy music that still employs clean vocals. Their sound is hard to classify because it's a blend of progressive metal, thrash metal, power metal, and a tiny hint of death metal (specifically in the drumming). I would highly recommend their 1996 magnum opus The Politics of Ecstasy but really anything other than their debut is solid in my books. In any case here's a song off of TPoE, enjoy: |

Maybe I am strange but I like Epica much more than Nightwish. The reason why is probably soft female voice together with male growling. It's interesting contrast that make their music more diverse for me. |
Oh and I have been looking for good Metal bands,I've tried people like Bullet for my Valentine and Pantera, and I do not like them.I only liked 5 Fingered Death Punch out of all the Metal I have listened to.
Thanks for recommendation guys,I'll try the other later today if I find the time. |
Idyl Exhibit
Check out this local band here in Sioux Falls, SD. They have a facebook page and have several videos out of them playing live. They are about to put out their first full album and has a demo out. |
Out of the ones you guys suggested,I'm going to try:
Nightwish Lacuna Coil The Gathering I can't wait to hear The Gathering though. |

Well, I've always said I like metal. But in reality I like Black Sabbath, Motorhead and RATM. And I used to like Metallica. (not so much anymore)
The only band out of them 3 I still listen to is Black Sabbath. Am I missing out on some absolutely brilliant metal bands? If so, who am I missing out on? |
Black Sabbath themselves influenced countless bands to slow the tempo and down tune the guitars. An insane amount of doom metal bands are influenced heavily by them or are even just Sabbath rip offs.
Id consider giving the debut albums by Pentagram, Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General and Trouble a listen. May not be your thing but i dig them. |
Black Sabbath are the only metal band I ever really got into. I liked Motorhead a lot at one time as well. I've never heard of any of them, I'm such a Metal n00b. I'll be sure to give them all a listen. (Opens wiki)

Well they are all just bands ive thrown out there because of the mention of Sabbath. Id give them a go but if you are still looking for more metal after that i could point you in another direction.

I like In Flames, recommendations?
I really like in flames. Especially the album A sense of purpose, every song on that album is great. their old stuff is good but i prefer the newer stuff.
The bands listed with them classified as Melodic Death Metal in the education sticky, i just dont care for as much. 2 other bands i really like are five finger death punch and linkin park. if that gives u any more direction to stuff i like. i dont like stuff i cannot understand, if i have to google the lyrics u cant sing.. |

Most people that say things such as what you've said up there don't have a clear understanding. The growls in Death Metal actually take quite a bit of skill to pull off correctly and without causing damage. I'm not saying all Death Metal vocalist are skilled and pull them off correctly, because that's ignorant. What I'm saying is that you can't say they are bad singers because a lot of them are talented individuals. On the other side of this, you've got people that sing cleanly and are easy to understand, but still aren't exactly good singers. I would go as far as saying most Death Metal vocalist are more talented than Chester Bennington. To say someone can't sing because they are practicing a different vocal style is a bit unfair is all I'm trying to say here. I do understand that you're not a fan of the vocal style and I respect that, because a lot of people aren't. |

i would assume from the first part of my post that it would be obvious i was using it to explain how i felt about certain types of music, bands, and the sound i prefer. But to dumb it down, what i mean is, i like melodic death metal, not death metal, not black metal, etc. I could have swore i posted in "Metal & Rock Music Recommendations" and not in "Lets start a pointless argument and not recommend any music to people who post here". |
Megadeth
Does anybody like Megadeth, I havent listend to alot of their material yet but enough to suggest that they have good guitar players, Ive heard some nice harmony leads, etc. on what I have listen to so far.

Probably the best track on the album although the lyrics are terrible which Mustaine admits to. |
I listened to bits of what Mojo recommended but nope, metal still isn't doing it for me. Other than Black Sab my Metal listening is quite low. Why doesn't metal have bands that are appealing as them? And aren't well, shit.

Diamond Head White Spirit Angel Witch |
@jackhammer
Not strictly metal? I can feel a bit of Black Sabbath in there. I quite liked it from what I heard but it's late and the alcohol is starting to wear off, I need piece more than metal so I'll have to revisit things tomorrow. Note to self. @urban Same applies, I'll definitely listen to some tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation but it's a bit late to be rocking out. I must remember to come back tomorrow although I listened to "I Am Evil" - Diamond Head, sounded good, again very Black Sabbathy :D |
If you want something really Sabbathy then go with Saint Vitus
|
Not looking for anything strictly Sabbathy but Black Sabbath are the only Metal band I've listened to and I've thought wow, this is the dogs bollocks.
So stuff along them lines would be the type of stuff that would maybe appeal to me, but I have an open mind. Even if I only had a handful of metal bands I liked I'd be happy cos at the moment I have a grand total of 1. I'll come back to this thread tomorrow with a fresh head and get ready to listen :thumb: |

You could even venture into late 1970`s Van Halen for a more pop metal type sound even though the quality is inferior but there is still some great material here. |
So many bands try to rip Sabbath off and do a good job at it but none/most of them still don't have that Sabbath sound. I'm not sure what to suggest to you, but maybe some Burning Saviours would appeal to you? Its basically a Sabbath/Pentagram/Led Zeppelin influenced band. They may be more Hard Rock than anything, but certainly worth a try. I suggest something off one of their two first albums. I would link you to one of their songs but I don't have enough posts. I know Youtube has some songs by them though.
|
Since no one loves me in the regular music recommendations thread, I guess I'll try here.
Looking for a Power Metal band that's like 3 Inches of Blood, and NOT DragonForce. *shudders at the thought of DragonForce* Also, I'm looking for a Melodic Death Metal band like The Black Dahlia Murder. Finally, I'm looking for Thrash, like Slayer (any particular song recommendations for Slayer would be nice as well.) Thanks! |
