consider the landscape of rock music in the late 80s / early 90s when FNM was coming to fruition. consider the hair, the attitude, the overall message presented to the masses. it was garbage. 100% pablum for the poofy hair and spandex crowd.
now consider the so-called underground from that day as well (the one as seen from the perspective of the masses). DIY punk rock action at its finest. still very much rooted in speed and aggression. with only a hint of the 'alternative' rock that was about to step up in a large way.
then you get a band like FNM who wants to include a cover on what their label is likely seeing as their big splash into the mainstream. the band already has attention from its earlier singles, comparisons to the Red Hot Chili Peppers when they were still on fire - so what do they do? they take the longest, slowest song from one of the least cool bands at the time and slap it into the middle of their album. it's as much of a flip off to their label as it was to their potential fans who just didn't 'get' them beyond the surface. same as they did when they recorded the cheesiest R&B radio hit they could think of (Easy) or a movie theme (Midnight Cowboy).
to call it unnecessary is to miss its point entirely.
