They are damn good but if you are of the persuasion of a Metal tinged sound then Pig Destroyer are the balls. No bassist either and still damn intense. I grew up around the birth of Grindcore and PD are one of the few bands who still knock my head off sonically.

Piss Me Off 07-30-2009 05:40 PM

I see Agoraphobic Nosebleed as sort of a novelty but Pig Destroyer are brilliant, Phantom Limb was my grindcore intro.

you seen the video where the vocalist from PD screams without a microphone?

I have to disagree here luke. They used Drum machines on Altered States Of America which some purists hated but they are a sincere band and their latest has a live drummer again. Check this out:

Damn good methinks.

Piss Me Off 07-30-2009 05:50 PM

Haha that is pretty epic i have to admit! I wrote them off because all i heard form them was albums of 20 second songs of noise which made them seem a bit try hard. If the rest of that album is like that i may have to try it out.

The Unfan 07-30-2009 06:09 PM

Napalm Death
Nasum
Cripple Bastards
Assuck
Carcass

jackhammer 07-30-2009 06:25 PM

Magrudergrinder are OK too. Unfortunately so many of the early pioneers are no more. Such a shame that these turned into a generic Thrash band. Had many a great gig spent with these fellas. So good you can hear the vinyl rips from the vid lol.

The kind of ambience that Leatherface had going on in his head whilst he strolled the fields around his house. It's really quite therapeutic.

hip hop bunny hop 04-21-2011 06:43 PM

1. Repulsion
2. Napalm Death

The other spots are a toss up between:

Unseen Terror are great, except for those songs about Garfield.

Siege are wonderful as well.

Blood have been going for 20+ years now, and have yet to change styles. Still wonderful grindcore. This song is a remake of an earlier song of theirs.

I've only got one The Red Chord song (Prey for Eyes) and I've always considered grindcore to be kind of crap. But I'm keen to actually give it the time of day and would appreciate being pointed in the right direction by somebody with a bit of knowledge on the genre.

Metal Connoisseur 05-27-2011 08:10 AM

I understand that most extreme metal is an acquired taste, but I heard Pig Destroyer the other day and cannot see myself getting into grindcore. However, I used to have Scum by Napalm Death but lost it somehow...maybe I'd enjoy it if I listened to it again

The Red Chord are not representative of grindcore. Did you happen to listen to the Youtube clips put up by others and myself in this thread? That would seem to be a logical place to start.

Anyways, the general consensus of "great grindcore" usually involves a few of the following:

Pig Destroyer
Godflesh (mainly the "Streetcleaner" album)
Carcass (first 3 albums)
Repulsion
Napalm Death

Some great "second tier" bands are:

Unseen Terror
Assuck
Exhumed
General Surgery
Discordance Axis
Bolt Thrower (although I'd call them death metal, they generally get labelled grindcore)
Impetigo
Watchmaker
Commit Suicide
Extreme Noise Terror
Agoraphobic Nosebleed
****...I'm Dead
Nasum
Nuclear Death
Sore Throat

....mind, these aren't all bands I'd personally endorse, but these are the more common names.

Phobia is a great live act. I've got a few lp's that Steve gave me, but they really are best enjoyed live.

almauro 05-27-2011 10:56 AM

I'm with the consensus that PD is the best grindcore band. There's something special between the interplay of Scott Hull and Brian Harvey on drums. They're also completely sic, which helps their cause. I've really grown to appreciate Nasum and I consider all their albums upper-tier. Brutal Truth is another band that's completely awesome. Regarding Napalm Death...love the first half of "Scum", the second half and FETO are not as good.

supermarlin 05-30-2011 12:47 AM

So I'm really enjoying Pig Destroyer. Is there a really definitive album which I should start with or is it all quality?

No Terrorizer? "World Downfall" is the top of the style. Best grindcore release.

Your top tier is good though, despite missing them. Second is decent, though I would consider Bolt Thrower a death/grind band... they have elements of both, more of a grind leaning on first couple records.

Assuck is also amazing.

Start w/ "Prowler in the Yard".

BastardofYoung 05-30-2011 12:56 PM

Terrifyer.

World Downfall is a great record, but I'd take Horrified over it anyday. Really, I'd take Horrified over any grindcore album, and over most any album of any genre.

But, yeah, I forgot Terrorizer. And Brutal Truth. And Anal ****. And Anal Blast. And Prosthetic ****. And Nemo. And Agoraphobic Nosebleed. And Old Lady Drivers. And Bathtub ****ter. And Blood. And Phobia. And Siege. And Agathocles, those stupidly prolific dutch bastards..... I actually laughed so hard whiskey shot out of my nose when a friend showed me some dork who had managed to track down every release of theirs, and amassed it for a sort of grindcore porn shot.

hip hop bunny hop 05-31-2011 10:15 PM

Are any of the Grindcore fans here familiar with Watchmaker? They play straight-forward grindcore, but the musicianship is quality, and the songs actually have some variety without genre blending.

Mondo Bungle 06-03-2011 10:42 PM

Assück
GridLink
Terrorizer
Napalm Death
Insect Warfare

supermarlin 06-03-2011 10:58 PM

Downloaded Phantom Limb and Prowler in the Yard. Good albums, thanks.

BastardofYoung 06-03-2011 11:08 PM

now download "Terrifyer". Way better album than "Phantom Limb" and just as good as "Prowler...".. if not just a tad bit better to my ears.

supermarlin 06-04-2011 02:40 AM

Terrifyer is great! Thanks for hitting me up.

Howard the Duck 06-04-2011 04:31 AM

Napalm Death
Carcass
Terrorizer
Intense Degree
Boltthrower
