I like Tool, been a big fan since Undertow, but I wouldn't mind if their sound evolved more. What would Tool sound like if they released their first album today? I'm also always curious what they would sound like if they weren't so anal and "spit albums out" a bit more frequently, talking themselves less seriously. In 2015/2016, I'd probably enjoy that type of Tool album more than I will anything that sounds like a "natural progression" from their 9 year old previous album. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I'll enjoy it as much as 10,000 Days, but let's be honest...that one was a little stale already. I'm just hoping for something fresh from these guys. They were a huge influence on a shitload of bands in the 90s and I hate for their new material to sound just like that.

I think TOOL is too smart to put something out that sounded like regurgitated leftovers from previous studio sessions of other albums. It has never been how they operate. I feel that each album has been a progression, never steps backward. Some say they're too technical, or anal of a band. But my view is that they appreciate the art that's music, they don't take it for granted and rush what should be painstakingly cared for until it's ready for people to hear. 10,000 Days was by no rights their best album, but it was progress from the last album and I could hear that when I listened to it.

However. It may not be a stretch to say that we've probably already gotten the best album TOOL may ever release, which in my opinion is Lateralus. But you never know with these guys. It might be intentional that they haven't released their crowning jewel album yet. Right now it is Lateralus. And the album to take that honor is yet to come.

This new album is coming. Last one took just as long. We'll get it.

I agree with everything you said. I love 10,000 Days and loved it even more when I noticed the relevance to a few songs pertaining to 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's no Lateralus by any means but it shouldn't be and I love every minute of it. Maynard had to turn his Mother into an angel for homage. Now we wait and see what's on their minds now that the lawsuit is over and Carey has some new toys ;)

Wings for Marie/10000 Days(pt2) are the best two tracks Tool have ever done.

Certainly impressive.

I appreciate 10,000 Days so much, just by what it represents; beautiful life. It also had a certain darkness to it, but it wouldn't have worked so well without that mourning that Maynard shown in the lyrics and music. He lost his mother. 10,000 Days was his way of sending her off, and mourning her, but also celebrating her life. So it's an album that's special.

Lateralus as a song and album is fantastic, however I still have to go with Wings for Marie / 10000 Days. Keep in mind, it's difficult for me to put a song or two of Tool's as "their best" as with each album, they throw a few at you that could easily take the title of "their best work" but with the emotion and meaning behind Wings For Marie etc etc, I just find it to be an incredibly well done set of songs that really tells the listener how Maynard was feeling through all of what he was going through.

Well yeah, they pretty much have like seven songs that are their best songs.

This one though,

The Grudge rocks way hard too

Rosetta Stoned is fantastic. They played it when I saw them live a few years ago, and it kicked so much ass.

Jerk-Off fan club of one.

But I agree on Rosetta Stoned being one of their best.

"Opiate" would be a top for me as well
