I think a lot of people credit MJK more than he deserves.

Agreed, definately overrated.

333 06-02-2009 03:21 PM

No one pays nearly enough attention to Jones, Carey or Chancellor.

Danny Carey is an awesome drummer. But then again, he gets alot of credit among drummers.

ElephantSack 06-02-2009 03:25 PM

Chancellor's techniques are something that I really appreciate. If you take the time to decipher exactly which instrument you are hearing at what time, you might be surprised to find out that, "Holy ****! That was a bass?!"

333 06-02-2009 03:31 PM

True, he's noticed amongst drummers, but 90% of the time, when you hear someone talking about Tool (especially if it's a female; go figure), they're usually ranting about how much a god Maynard is. Have you heard is side projects? I've listened to it hear and there and am not impressed. As a band, Maynard of course steals the thunder. That's why I am always cautious of the front man. :) I typically favor Mr. Jones. Keenan's lyrics touch me, yes, but Jone's riffs make me cry. He's truly an underrated mastermind - not only in the sense of playing the guitar, either. Also helps that he kind of looks like Spock.

boo boo 06-02-2009 09:17 PM

Tool fans really do go crazy over MJK as a lyricist, and Carey is very highly regarded among drummers.

But Jones and Chancellor get very little credit, am I the only one who thinks Jones is actually a really good guitarist?

boo boo 06-02-2009 11:54 PM

Yeah, I'm just tired of every Dream Theater and Symphony X fan giving the guy hell because he's not a wankaholic.

Jp has a helluva lot more on jones than "wanking" abilities though let me tell you. Like... Virtually every other aspect of guitar playing.

DON?????? Is that you?

Mordecai 06-03-2009 07:05 AM

I think Adam should start a side project

it would be better than APC

boo boo 06-03-2009 07:18 AM

He and Tom Morello were originally in a band together. Maybe they should to a reunion project. That would be pretty sweet.

Mordecai 06-03-2009 07:56 AM

Jones is a magnificent guitarist, and my favourite member of Tool. A side project from him would be awesome! Too bad he's too busy with his art and stuff.

Antonio 06-11-2009 08:37 PM

man, i'm surprised i haven't gotten into Tool yet!

but i digress....i'm gonna download two of their albums right now. the question, MB, being which two are good starting points for the band?

Lateralus is my favourite album. I'd start with Lateralus and 10,000 days. I find most people like these albums more than their earlier ones, like Aenima or Undertow.

333 06-11-2009 11:22 PM

boo boo, you are not the only person that thinks Jones is an amazing guitarist. If you read a few posts back, you'll see that he makes me blubber like a little bitch sometimes.

wayfarer, I completely agree on Maynard. He's a cocky son of a bitch these days. As for J.C's riffs - this might be kind of a given but "Disposition"? Oh, fuck yes. EDIT: I forgot about "Intension"! Another song that showcases the bass. I think he is the most discredited member of Tool.

What do you guys think of Paul d'Amour's work with them? Well, I guess in a more general way of asking - older Tool? Undertow? Opiate?

And Antonio, I think you should start with Ænima or Lateralus. Though is an amazing album, I think it's also crucial to get a feel for them before 10,000 Days . Lateralus changed my life. Because I've always been more into the transitional aspects of everything (weather, music, life), Lateralus would be my favorite album by them. You're into some heavier shit, though, so I know you'd dig AEnima. And hey, if you're feeling adventurous, dig deeper for some rawness - the days before Maynard gave a fuck.

sakuradrops915 06-11-2009 11:56 PM

i havrn't read all the posts but i haven't noticed anyone say anything about APC and Tool being completely different bands... Yeah Maynard is in both, but APC is HIS project...and his alone. Its because of APC that Tool didnt release 10000 days for so long. I have got to say though... I love them both... there music is so original. There is nothing like going and experiencing them live...it is hard to put into words...

Most definately... I really don't care much for his lyrics or his vocals.

Yeah, you should probably get on reading those posts. I'm sure most of us are aware that those are separate bands. I'm, in fact, a little peeved that they are in the same thread because APC will never amount up to Tool, and honestly, I think Maynard is a little bitter about that.

I agree, I too was wondering why both bands had been lumped into the one thread. They are both completely different acts striving for different things. Maynard has always said that A Perfect Circle has been separate from Tool, and is an outlet for different music/ expression etc.

333 06-12-2009 01:25 AM

The boyf and I talk about this a lot and we've come to the conclusion that Maynard is so bitter about blowing his load as a musician so soon that he's desperately trying to compensate. A little far fetched, I know, but think about it.

Antonio 06-12-2009 01:26 AM

well i'm listening to Lateralus now, so far i'm enjoying it :)

I'm surprised. You went for the transitional piece to start. Where to now that you're in the middle? Later or more recent?

and puscifer will never amount to APC.

Anyone going to see Tool this summer? I'm going to the show at Molson Ampitheatre, can't wait.

I wholey agree... I myself play the bass...trying to keep up with some of his rifs are impossible...His techniques are different from other bassists in regard to note progression and some slapping aspects. I think of all the bassists that I have forced myself to learn about, he is the bloody best.

Agreed. I took a listen on the day it came out. I seriously don't see what the fuss is all about. Where've you been, Shawn?

And Antonio, I have albums and I can share them with you. Will you show me how? I have Opiate, Undertow, AEnima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days. Take your pick. Also, what did you think of Lateralus after a full listen?

Hooked you up with some samps from each album you haven't heard:

Opiate (1992):

Undertow (1993):

AENIMA (1996):

10,000 Days (2006):

I wish! If they ever came to Australia again I'd see them in a heartbeat. I'm so jealous of anyone who gets to see them live, grr.

And Puscifer of course will never live up to APC. It's a completely different thing, more of an experimental project Maynard started not knowing where it would head. I don't really like it though... I wish he'd just put all of his energy into Tool!

Maybe if tickets weren't over $100 a piece. I saw them 7 years ago for $50. What happened between then and now? Danny Carey already has a ****in' Lambourgini! What the **** does he need my $100 for?

SpunkySkunk347 06-13-2009 12:45 AM

I'm going to see them this summer - don't care how far I have to drive or how much i have to pay for a ticket. Come Hell, high-water, space aliens, or flying stealth bananas, I'm still going to see them damnit!

RonaldSays 06-13-2009 06:19 AM

I just hope they're coming over to Europe soon. Can't wait to see them over here. I was hoping they may play some festivals here but I guess that's gonna happen.

How else can he afford another solid gold Humvee and a diamond studded swimming pool. Those things don’t grow on trees.

Maynard's a ****ing pimp.
