Gotjuice's post was indeed a very valid one indeed.... both albums do definitely suit a very different mood and should be listened to in this context!

Couldn't agree more. |
i don't know why 10,000 days get so much flak. it's beautiful to me. to see it live is phenomenal. my only problem with it is that the engineer left it a little muddy in some parts. other than that, it's the perfect next step in their progression of musical expression. it's just so wide open. and it still abides by their sort of 'rule' that all songs individually need to be autonomous and great while still contributing to the flow of awesomeness which is the album in its entirety.
and mellow? i disagree thoroughly. the subject matter and the outrageous-yet-not-flippant dynamics make it just as intense as ever, if not more. it makes me very happy to see them just doing what they want to do, and not regurgitating the past and choking on their attempts to relive it. if all musicians behaved like tool, pretense and expectations regarding artists and their output would be obsolete. |
I can see how everyone decided to disagree with me...I guess I wasn't clear enough in my post. The fact that Lateralus is cold and unfeeling with 10000 Days is the opposite is pretty much exactly my point. They feel like they go together. 10000 Days is Lateralus II for that exact reason, they cover two sides of one coin.
I'm sure I'll still be alone in this opinion, but does anyone else see what I mean? |
I can see what you mean... it's a similar way to the way Devin Townsend wrote the "Alien" album by Strapping Young Lad and the "Synchestra" album for his own Devin Townsend band... Apparently he went off his bipolar disorder meds to write the music on Alien and then wrote the music from Synchestra after going back on meds and normalizing himself... in that way, these two albums were kinda tied to together as a first episode and sequel format... similarly Lateralus and 10,000 Days kinda form flip sides of moods, so in that regard, your point is definitely Valid, Duga... the albums themselves are, however quite different sounding and feeling, and one is a progression from the other, for sure, much like Townsend's efforts...

I remember arguing with some guys the other day who crapped on Adam Jones for using too many "nu meta" riffs.
Don't really hear it, unless all hard rocking downtuned riffs are nu metal ones. Lateralus is my favorite of theirs, I certainly don't here anything nu metal-ish in there. Aenima? Maybe. |

I wouldn't call them nu metal riffs at all, that album just has more riff heavy songs.

Yeah, like Big3 said they predate the whole nu metal thing.
I love Incubus, who use "nu metal" riffs I guess, and SOAD. Nu Metal is a word people just like to use now to completely write stuff off, several of the better bands who are unfortunate to get stuck with the nu metal label is stuff I'd call "alternative metal". |
|
That is good news. But it's bad news they're just now starting. It'll be a few years before we see it!
And did the author really use the term "math rock" in that article? |
I thought that was confirmed that a while ago... either way, exciting!

Not one to read 256 posts made over a period of 6 years, I'm going to go ahead and say that I enjoy listening to Tool, but in order to begin listening to them I need to be in the mood to listen to them. If I'm not in the mood "I want to listen to Tool", I can't listen to Tool. No idea why and it's one of the only bands that does this to me, but yeah. Anyone else have this issue?
Nice to see a new album's in the works, though. |

Awesome. But yea, you're right, if they're just starting then it's going to be a while. We're used to that with Tool though. |
I gotta agree with the notion that they reward those of us who are patient, though... :)
|
Oh I'm always patient. I was just trying to point out that if they're now just starting, I wouldn't be surprised if the gap between 10,000 Days and the next one will be larger than we've ever seen before. It's already been 4 years as of next week. ;) (hard to believe really)
|
Well I'm still right here, givin' blood, keeping faith and I'm still right here.... until the next Tool album comes out.

Although chances are it is going to be a while before the album actually gets completed. I swear I had already heard that they had announced another album, maybe it's just now that they have actually started thinking about it/ working on it/ piecing things together etc. Either way, I'm excited for when it finally happens, and they better come to Australia or New Zealand! |

|
... and they better come to Milwaukee, Wisconsin!!! :)
|
Maybe they'll tour around with Karnivool!!!

As much as I love Tool, i do think, at times that Maynard can be *ahem* a bit of a Tool... then again i once heard the guy praising Peter Gabriel's Passion album, which I thoroughly never expected and that made me respect him a gazillion times more...

I think 10,000 days brings it out even more... that's fast becoming one of my favorite Tool albums, actually...
|
I really think 10000 days rewards repeated listens everytime I go back to it I fall in love with another track, phrase or riff/fill.
Although it may lack the agression and punch of earliar work it's a much more rounded and mature work. |

I don't think Maynard is a 'tool,' I think he is just very, very firm in his beliefs and in the ways he expresses them. I think he would be a very intimidating person to meet, I would be terrified of him... And yeah, totally agreed that Tool have a tribal aspect of them, which is apparent in almost all of their work. |
Good band.
Overrated as a mother****er, though. |

Love Tool, though I wish they'd give more time to the next album instead of touring off and on.
