Best show I've ever been to :) Hope you get um.

Violent & Funky 09-28-2010 01:27 PM

When will the new album be out?

duga 09-28-2010 02:55 PM

3 or 4 more years.

Violent & Funky 09-28-2010 03:51 PM

Seriously?

Astronomer 09-28-2010 05:04 PM

Well, all the previous times Tool made the effort to come to Australia were dates within 1 year before or after album releases, so I'm hoping it's less than 2 years away...

 This is probably true. Speculation says it'll be released within the next year or two, but Maynard's such a pompous twat, I wouldn't doubt your estimate.

333 09-28-2010 10:56 PM

Hahaha Spike. Agreed and agreed.

Violent & Funky 09-28-2010 11:08 PM

Yeah, one of the news releases I read said they hoped to be premiering new material by then, but idk...

I realize that, but it has already been four years and they have historically taken four to five years to release a follow-up...

Nickle Bag 09-29-2010 09:24 PM

Tool's art is worth the wait. I don't care how long it is between albums. They get better and better. It's something they have in common with Peter Gabriel, Faith No More, and I can't think of anyone else.

Are you referring to any particular album?

No, I'm totally with you there. I just get so sick of how far up Maynard's ass everyone tends to be. My shoulders sit snugly underneath's Jones' rear.

fixed :p: hehe

333 10-01-2010 01:27 PM

Bahahaha Danny Carey's the 2nd overrated member. Jones ... Well there's nothing wrong with him at all. :P

Edit: On a more serious note, Chancellor is one sick bassist.

Lol yeah, I know what you mean. I once dated a guy that took me to see Tool, but he was too distracted with his hard on for Carey to notice that I was there with him.

On a sidenote, Jones played with a Stratocaster when they recorded "Pushit", which incidently is the same guitar my boyfriend plays and they also share the same last name  I notified him of this and was immediately shunned for the rest of the evening :p:
There's a lot of hate for this band.

Freebase Dali 10-01-2010 02:02 PM

Carey isn't so overrated. He's actually a very good drummer and deserves a majority of the cred he gets. I wouldn't call him the best technically or anything, but he's part of their style in a huge way.

There is quite a bit of dislike for this band. Most of the people I talk to about Tool who are into the same music as me really only have a problem with the two most recent albums - 10,000 Days and Lateralus. It might be a coincidence, but I noticed that the ones whose favorite Tool album is Lateralus are also the ones that connect with most. :D

I'm not saying Carey doesn't deserve the praise he gets nor am I saying that his skills don't mesh well with the other band members. I'm referring to each member's level of acknowledgement in the band.

Freebase Dali 10-01-2010 02:46 PM

Apart from the fact that bassists are almost always overlooked when they're not a focal point either musically or otherwise, I'd say the only significantly overrated person in Tool is Maynard, and that's just because a lot of people can't see past a lead singer by default. It's Adam's band in more ways than one and he's probably underrated by people who don't know that, but that's to be expected.

Me personally, if I absolutely had to rate on individual merit, I'd go:
Adam > Danny > Maynard > Justin.... but I wouldn't. Because I know that there's only one person in that group who could be replaced without destroying the band. He's on the end.

Goblin Tears 10-01-2010 03:34 PM

^^^^ I agree. The bass is the only thing you could ever use to coax me into re-listening to a Tool album. The vocals and lyrics are definitely their weak point.

I get your point now. Thank you for elaborating.

I'd love to hear some music that is focused on the bass - aside from Les Claypool. For some artists, even when the bass is the focal point, it gets drowned out by the other instruments. Like Mingus, for example. When I listen to his music, I feel like I have to try harder than I should to pick out the bass. So, is this because of the time period he was in or simply because of his choice of bass guitar (which was usually a double bass).

There are plenty of bands whose focus is clearly on the bass virtuoso for at least a majority of their songs:

Red Hot Chili Peppers (obviously you are aware of them but I think their early output is relevant), Minutemen, Yummy, and Infectious Grooves all seem like worthy answers...

They're all essential, but you're correct. Tool with another frontman could be nearly as great, possibly even better if the guy fit perfectly like Maynard, but had more ability.

Danny is irreplaceable, there isn't a drummer that plays with his power and creativity around... at least not that I've heard. I've heard faster and more technical drummers(though that's picking at straws, as Danny's nearly a virtuoso technically), but none with that grooving, powerful feel that he produces and certainly none who are as brilliant creatively. Tool's percussion segments are out of this world.

Adam's riffmastery and art direction is right up there. Justin is one of the cleanest bassists around as well.

Unbelievable band, best in the last 20 years IMO.

I think they have some of the best lyrics around. What are your issue's with the lyrical content?

And who do you like lyrically for a comparison?

OctaneHugo 10-07-2010 08:34 PM

I love Danny Carey and I wouldn't for a second trash Tool's lyrics. Maybe in a few places, but overall - damn fine.

I wish Maynard could sing, though. Never been a huge fan of his voice.

You'd put Justin last? Aww... I love Justin's bass work since he joined Tool. I think he's an amazing bassist and he's utilised in the instrument in ways I'd never seen before. When I first started listening to Tool (when I was young and stupid) sometimes I'd often hear sounds and be like "What is that?!" and it turns out it's bass guitar.

I think I'd probably put Maynard last in terms of individual merit. Adam Jones and Danny Carey are amazing, so is Justin like I just mentioned, and Maynard is an amazing vocalist with a great presence but he seems to come off as a bit of a douche and he IS overrated by Tool fans.

Come to think of it, now that I've written all that, I think I still think of all members as equal contributors.

Oh and P.S. I'm officially seeing Tool in January, **** yeah!

Freebase Dali 10-07-2010 10:14 PM

I'm just being realistic about Justin. Nothing against his abilities or anything.
And I wouldn't put Maynard dead last, simply because his lyrics are a huge part of what Tool is about. Without them, it'd be like having a face without a name, although I can't say that someone else wouldn't be able to do as good of a job. But I'm more sentimental than anything, so regardless, I still prefer Maynard behind the mic because of that.

Ah, will it be your first time seeing them?
They sound awesome live, you'll love it.

Yes, will be my first time seeing them live, I've been waiting so long, I missed out on tickets last time... and tickets sold out in 2 minutes this time around but I managed to get some, so happy! It's a festival though... but I'm sure even Tool can sound good at a festival. Hopefully!

Stinkfist 10-15-2010 12:49 AM

They sound just as good at a festival as they do in a large venue/arena saw them at last BDO they played and they tore it up. Fingers crossed maynard joins deftones on stage for Passenger that would blow my sox off!

canamike 11-02-2010 03:36 PM

I just recently started playing Tool and even though the guitar isn't complex its definately really fun :) Love this band!

Astronomer 04-19-2012 02:21 AM

Omgzzz totally bumping this thread since I am back now.

So I just want to say, I've pretty much given up on Tool releasing a new album. In fact I haven't listened to them in so, so long. Even Karnivool are working on their next recording faster than Tool!

I wouldn't give up on them yet. Any tool fan knows that the band is very mysterious about when they say they're in the studio, and when they say they're going to release a new album. I'm hoping for a new album this year, but i'm not going to be disappointed if it doesn't happen.

Nice to see you posting again :)

If you're looking for something to curb the shakes and sweats that accompany waiting for a new Tool release I would recommend checking out the band Rishloo. They kind of occupy the same space as Pineapple Thief, a band that manages to mimic the sound and style of another, better band, but does so in such a way that makes them quite listenable. I would recommend their 2007 album Eidolon, although I've heard good things about their 2004 album Terras Fames.

Euronomus 04-19-2012 01:34 PM

What are ya'll talking about, they released an album just a couple of months ago.

This is what I was just going to recommend to Lateralus. Pretty shameless Tool ripoff, but it's not bad

Zer0 04-19-2012 05:09 PM

I would have expected a new album by now. I know there was five years between Ænima and Lateralus, and five years between Lateralus and 10,000 Days, but come on now six years is pushing it. Six years!

10,000 Days wasn't quite as good as Ænima and Lateralus but I'm still wondering can they still pull off something impressive at this stage in their career. Hopefully they will release something late this year or early next year.

Frownland 04-19-2012 06:14 PM

I would prefer a band like Tool to take their time to develop the best album possible rather than the route that many bands (unfortunately follow) where they just throw together albums on the fly to sell as many as they can. A six year wait may not be a bad thing, it also aides in appreciating the album all the more when it does come out.
