Songs that DEFINE Metal

I personally think IRON MAIDEN are the epitome of metal. Sure, they became quite commercial, almost the non-metal fan's idea of what a metal band should sound like, "Metal 101" as they'd say in the US, but that wasn't a conscious decision. They became famous and popular not because they played to the gallery (as in, made their music more commercial to suit radio/TOTP) but despite it. Their music was just too good NOT to get radio airplay, and let's be honest, there are a few bands you can mention now (Metallica, Motorhead, Slayer, Sabbath) and anyone who has no clue about their music just knows who they are, and what sort of music they play. They're legendary really.

Maiden began almost as a punk band with their first two albums, with Paul Di'Anno singing and even though I wasn't a fan of his style he was perfect for those sort of songs, like the phenomenal "Phantom of the opera" and the title track to their debut, as well as the occasional slow song like "Innocent exile". After he left (was kicked out) Bruce Dickinson took the band in new, more structured direction and the rest is history. "The number of the Beast" is an album every metal fan should have, and though they have turned a little to progressive metal in recent years, you can still look back to albums like "Seventh son of a seventh son", "Piece of mind", "Powerslave" and "Brave new world" for examples of how it should be done.

Sure the Paul D'Anno albums were kind of the perfect marriage between punk and metal, two genres that are usually opposed to each other.

You probably didn't know Certified but when he was here (for a brief period) he was a real goldmine of older metal.
