mastodon is pretty unique. i've been into them for several years. stoner metal is what i might call it. i could be wrong. saw them at ozzfest 2004 or 5, they rocked out pretty good. i give em a 8.

stoner metal? um no.

anyway, this band absolutely rocks. fckn OWN all other metal bands. saw them live too back in 2006. yes, they CAN actually play their sh1t as if it were the CD itself.

love the way how it straddles the line between hardcore/post-hardcore and prog-metal.

dailor's one of the most creative, talented drummers out there. only reason he gets dissed for the superfluity of fills is the lack of understanding of what he is doing - which is, trying to create the illusion of free-jazz principles being applied to metal by making much of the drumming effectively tempo-less (though it always manages SOMEHOW to find the pocket).

band should have a new album out this year. can't wait.

Mastodon has a few ties to stoner rock; Josh Homme performed on the last album and Neil Fallon contributed vocals a few times. But you're right, they're definitely not stoner metal or whatever.

I keep getting mesmerized by the way the drummer plays; the tonal differences between his drumming and contemporary metal drummers just pulls me in. The crunchy riffs and the vocals are pretty brutal as well.

As I've said before, NWOAHM > NWOBHM.

I used to like them alot more than I do now for whatever reason. They're still not half bad, but not that great either.

I do love the album work. I'm waiting for it to drop, I'd rather buy it.

I also got a leaked copy but it was missing the last track so I deleted, I only take full albums. However I did give the tracks that I did have a good spin and I gotta say I was pretty happy with what I had heard.

Let me ask a question. I bought one of their albums and there was a sort of underproduced quality to it. And holy lord did the vocals suck. Is this a consistent characteristic of the band?
