I don't listen to them much, so I can't really give you a power point presentation on why I don't particularly care for them, but basically they're just boring. It's not because they're melodic either, black metal can be melodic and not suck, but CoF are just dull.

This is far superior.

Cradle of Filth is an amazing band. I understand why there are so many people who don't like them. It's a matter of taste. But I don't see why they get so much hate. They are good at what they do.

Also the back end has some of that ambient stuff you were curious about. Kind of like if Nintendo made the soundtrack to Lord of the Rings, but not as stupid as that sounds.

I like these both. Also, Det som engang var has a cool cover.
The ambient one sounds like something from Myst.

I agree with the OP, but my black metal taste isn't limited to the old school low-fi stuff.
Melodic, Symphonic, and simply high production classic black metal can sound great.

Symphonic: Graveworm, Illnath, Enslavement of Beauty, Old Man's Child, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Opera IX, Dimmu Borgir, Limbonic Art.

Melodic: Naglfar, Cradle of Filth, Catamenia, Keep of Kalessin, Siebenburgen, Vried, Borknagar, Algazanth, Dark Fortress, Skeletonwitch

Other: Satyricon, Samael, Watain, Windir, Immortal, Burzum, Darkthrone, Dark Funeral, Belphegor, Behexen, Anorexia Nervosa, Gehenna

lol That actually covers 80% of what I got, but then again I haven't been discovering music alot lately.
Bold are some who I found to have consistently high marks. I'm going off on my basis in iTunes.
Not sure who else does this but I rate every song on my iTunes with scrutiny, then create playlists with music sorted in their varying flavors.
Works awesome as a database to dissect what I like.
