ok i have to admit i was having a hard time getting into Earth
this album sorta clicked with me better yesterday, as i really concentrated on it and got its "nuances" with 3 songs all around the 20 minute mark or longer, it doesn't really get "boring", as there are a lot of strange things going on, and the opening track "Seven Angels" does have a pretty solid riff saying that, though, i do have major problems with the guitar tones throughout, Dylan uses too much flanger and the tone in itself is whiny and reedy, unlike say Sunn O))) which uses really "fat" tones so I'll give this to Naked City on a technical issue alone, and also because Leng Tch'e is on the whole a much more interesting listen Naked City - 1 Earth - 0 |
I like that Earth album and have owned it for a long time, but truth be told, when I started thinking about it I realized I haven't listened to it in about half a decade. Thinking about this some more, I realized that it's probably my least favorite Earth album, in large part due to what Howard mentioned about the guitar tone. So anyway, I'm voting Naked City.

I liked the Earth album but thought at times it just sounded too monotonous, what it did do very well though, was to present a menacing and brooding sound, something I actually prefer over the bleak sounding landscapes of black metal.

I'm guessing there are no more votes coming in here, so Naked City and Leng Tch'e wrap this up. Also thanks to Frownland for coming up with the Drone Metal showdown, as its a sub-genre that's not often mentioned much on the metal boards.

Ok before I ask somebody to come up with a topic and some albums, here is a quick battle by me (just 4 albums)
The Best Album That Metallica Never Released;) As the title suggests, here are four albums that were done by bands who very much had their own style, but for an album or two adopted a James Hetfield style bark to their sound, added Metallica style riffs into the mix, or just had a Metallica type feel to their sound, usually for commercial reasons. These albums though imo, are still great metal releases and great homages to classic era Metallica. not really in a metal mood currently
will give both a spin later |
"Blind" is a transition record for COC. They advertised for and got a new singer who sounds like Hetfield, but they also brought in Pepper Keenan who sings in a more stoner-southern-retro-rock style, which is the direction they ended up. IMO,it's a great collection of songs, but it's not exactly cohesive.
'"Dark Saga", is a short and sweet melodic thrash album, or what some refer to US Power Metal. It's pretty straight forward, but Barlow is phenomenal on this records, and he knocks the final ballad out of the park. This album has a great arch, that keeps my interest all the way through. As I selected both these album, I pretty much love both of them. This is one of my favourite COC album but as Alamuro stated its not exactly cohesive at times, but there are some stellar knock-out tracks on the album such as "Dance of the Dead" and "Vote With a Bullet" I just wished they'd kept with Karl Agell on lead vocals, rather than just going with the more retro-blues stuff that Pepper Keenan led the band into on the next album (even though I also love most of the following albums as well)
The Dark Saga is a special album for me, those Metallica style riffs perfectly executed by both Jon Schaffer and Randall Shawfer are killer stuff, but its the vocals of Matt Barlow that provide the killer touch on this album. The whole album is so cohesive and stands as one the best albums they ever put out. Dark Saga -2 Blind -0 |
I like CoC a lot but weirdly enough had never even heard of Blind before. It certainly does seem like a transitional album—and I prefer their later, more southern-rock influenced work—but I still enjoyed it a lot.
The Iced Earth album, on the other hand, didn't really click with me. Musically, it was okay but the guy's voice kind of ruined it for me. Dark Saga: 2 Blind: 1 |
