With their second album, Iced Earth came of age as an essential power metal band and when Matt Barlow took over vocal duties on the next album they would become a fully fledged power metal band. Before that they put out this album with John Greely on vocals and despite having a couple of dud tracks, the general feel of the album is great along with Greely`s vocals, also the album had a great cover as well.

Yeah, I love that album. Basically the bastard love child of Metallica and Iron Maiden.

No power metal thread is going to be complete without Manowar being mentioned, the classic Manowar releases were actually their first three albums, of which the debut was like a biker metal album and their third Hail to England which is really an early 1980s metal classic. After this they steered into a more power metal direction, often with patchy results, but the below album stands as their finest power metal release and an essential listen.

German band Running Wild in general were cheesy even by power metal standards, as they sung about pirates, treasure and the high sees on nearly every album with a great amount of cheese, but on this album they got it all altogether and produced easily their best ever album.

****. That. ****. "Under Jolly Roger" is a great song. Anyone who thinks it's cheesy needs to quit taking themselves so seriously. I think that most people who are concerned with whether or not power metal is cheesy, are really just self conscious. Just let go and get your pirate on!
