i've heard some of it - used to really be into Shrapnel Records

but these days, too much technicality for technicality's sake

But they always sounded a lot rawer than Dream Theater and Ray Alder is a better vocalist than James Labrie of DT, you may actually enjoy some of the albums, some are commercial sounding and the others definitely not.

i have a Shrapnel sampler with some of those era songs - they're alright but not exactly my cup of tea

I love Dragonland, but this is one of those genre's I can't listen to for more than an hour without getting a blistering headache.

It was on their third album released in 1990, that Blind Guardian started to release quality power metal and this album also serves as a stepping stone for their better known albums in the 1990s. Also it has a great cover, which is very Lord of the Rings and Warhammer in style.

One of the best tracks on the album and shows just how mellow the band can be.

Riot were a band that I always really like and this is one of their best power metal albums and another great vocal performance by Tony Moore as well.

This thread is a fair representation of my music collection when I was 16. Good stuff Unknown Soldier, keep it up.

@ Satchmo glad you`re enjoying it.

Another one of these albums that straddles the line between power metal and other metal genres, is this debut album by Sanctuary who were fronted by Warrel Dane who would later go on to form Nevermore. Nevermore are one of my all-time fav metal bands and Warrel Dane a favourite metal vocalist of mine. Most people tend to focus on Sanctuary`s second album Into the Mirror Black and this album gets far less love. The real strength of this debut album are the high pitched vocals put out by Warrel Dane which are sublime and he would never sing like this across any future albums.

Interestingly as a footnote, this album was produced by Dave Mustaine who also played guitar on one song "White Rabbit" a cover of the classic Jefferson Airplane song.
