By the way Dave, Great insight/Post.
Thanks hehe

And also, Sorry hahaha just sometimes that particular nerve gets hit in the right way then.... BOOM

While you're right, you did get Nirvana often enough in the mainstream it was still a breath of fresh air mixed in with the crap. It was never an 'all the time' kind of thing like so many people make it out to be. More like, 'did they already play Nirvana this afternoon?' while sitting through some crappy Boyz 2 Men video or similar drek.

Nirvana knocked MJ down the charts. If you were listening to mainstream and watching videos back then, you always had Nirvana there. Didnt Nirvana help bring a new form of Rock to the mainstream audience? By the way Dave, Great insight/Post.
I think the point being made here, is that none of these bands were mainstream or had visions of ever being mainstream (with the exception maybe of Pearl Jam, but that's a seperate issue). They just fell victims of marketing and the big labels. It was almost like, the powers to be deciding that they wanted to exploit these bands for a buck as the niche was there. You have to remember that there was a power vacum at the middle to heavier end of the rock spectrum at this time. The popularity of the heavier AOR bands had gone, hair metal had played its course and thrash metal was just too agressive for non-metalheads, so grunge was seen as a viable alternative from the alternative rock genre that could find mainstream appeal.

What is your opinion concerning the Stone Temple Pilots during the 90s?

Well as you know I love STP and have all their discography (even the poor stuff) They were grunge or just lumped in with grunge? It's awkward one to answer. There were some obvious musical similiarities and they weren't scruffs like some of their grungy counterparts and seemed to have embraced the mainstream better than some of their contemporaries, by the time their debut came out grunge was at its zenith as a mainstream genre.

As you probably know, when it comes for me liking a band it makes no real difference whether a band sounds commerical or not, I don't have any preference and its just down to whether I like the sound of the band or not. I've often stated that Scott Weiland was one of the finest vocalists of his generation.

Actually, I thought that you disliked STP. I agree with the above by the way. Yeah, there was a big difference in their debut Core, for example, in comparison to their style/sound of the single Sour Girl later on in the 90s.

So, Howard and Janszoon, you don't like STP at all?

I think their albums are all quality save for the latest one and No. 4.

Nope, I've always thought they were pretty terrible. The only Stone Temple Pilots I've ever even halfway liked is "Heaven and Hot Rods".
