Peart is an artist, Moon is a rock'n'roll drummer.

I've always been a fan of Moon's drumming... it's just so powerful and raw.

this is a tough call seeing as moon's career was pretty short lived but i'll stick with him as the better of the two on intensity alone

I think Live at Leeds offers the best drumming ever caught on tape.

Peart is the better drummer all the way. There is no question of his technical superiority whatsoever. I happen to love both Rush and The Who; which is my favorite would be really hard for me to decide, I listen to each depending on my mood. As far as the comments that Peart's style is boring, I know this is a subjective matter, but when I listen to Rush, I sometimes find myself phasing out the other band members and listening to only Neil's part, I can't say the same for The Who. Neil Peart is a fantastic and original drummer and songwriter, one of the best in rock and roll. Despite Moon's crazy energy and improvisational style (Peart improvises too by the way), my vote goes to Peart, no question.

My vote goes to Neil here, simply cause I listen to Rush more than The Who. I have and listen to both of their discographies, but Rush just has a bigger kick for me.

My favourite drummer would probably have to be John Bonham though, along with Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer and Jon Fishman. I think all 4 of them are better than both Perth and Moon, but thats just me.

First of all im choosing Peart. Let me also say that, with exception of a few songs, I think Rush isn't that good. I mean their good, but their more math than music. And im not discrediting Moon's music or contribution to later generations, but as for who can hold two sitcks and hit them against drums? Its Peart. To go back to Jr.'s post, I'll agree with his fianal analogy, except that Moon didn't use all the crayons.

While it could be said that Moon did amazing designes with red blue and yellow, he never touched green, black, and orange. While I do think its fair to say Moon did what he wanted, I don't think its fair to say he did it all. I don't even know that he could if he wanted to.
I agree totally. Good post.

This, as far as I'm concerned. The drum sheet music for Limelight looks damn close to Zappa's fabled black page.

I don't agree with Rush being more math music, but Big3 seems to have that opinion about prog in general.

His color terms I don't understand at all, what is black and green exactly? I do agree that diversity goes to moon, and I also think he used more "colors".

The best way to compare them is that Peart is like Michelangelo, a technical mastermind who took traditional methods and perfected them, Peart is more like Dali, he knows what the rules are but he chooses to break every one and be all over the place. I consider them so different and impossible to compare but they're each among the best at what they do, so I consider them equals.

As for preference, I enjoy Moon's drumming more. As far as technical drummers go I'm more of a Bruford fan.

This is not true at all, unless you mean in a rock n roll context and instead of "only" you meant to say "first", then I could see your point. There's a lot of drummers who put what they do at the forefront and go beyond just being part of the rhythm section, most prog bands play in a way that every member equally shines, The Who were one of the first rock bands that really did this, so they were a huge influence on prog, not so much because of their style but because of how they broke barriers on what a rock band could be and what a rock band could do.
