as a drummer, I have to admit. This song (above) was a challenge. There is no easy groove to cop and then find the scattered dynamics. The whole song changes throughtout. The dynamics change. The groove is semi-consistent but changes.

Whoever (?) wrote this as an original and then put it down for others to learn and play is BEYOND a genius. Just learning it is hard. Whoever conceived this in its entirety is amazing.

If Curtis Mayfield conceived of this, many many blessings to that man and his offspring

The Meters are immense. Look-ka Py Py is one of my favourite albums from any genre.

If we're strictly talking soul (as opposed to funk) then my faves are:

1 Smoky Robinson - One Dozen Roses (Beautiful and underrated album you should check out. Features his hit 'Tears of A Clown' which is not even the best song here)
2 Otis Redding - Otis Blue (some of the best vocals I've ever heard)
3 Ike and Tina Turner - River Deep, Mountain High
4 Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
5 Curtis Mayfield - S/T

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.

Dunno whether this counts but I'm a HUGE fan of Level 42 (they're funk, right?). My favourite song is Freedom Someday or Heathrow.
