making the playoffs when you have no chance of actually winning the world series/championship is a terrible place to be, at least in the NBA and NFL, I guess the MLB might be different. It makes it so you get crappy draft picks every year and you have no way to actually advance your franchise. Look at the Milwaukee Bucks. They make the playoffs every single year as an 8 seed and they lose in the first round every single year. They will never be better than that, but they will never be worse than that, because they're trapped in this limbo that no team wants to actually be in. (never is of course relative, the Bucks could certainly find some luck and become excellent in 10 years or something)
There are 40 rounds in the MLB draft. Drafting isn't that big of a deal, and making the playoffs is everything.

youd be incorrect.

first off every team in the playoffs have the chance for a world series win, look at the wild card teams that have done it. look at the giants the last few years, they weere seen as probably the worst playoff team and theyve won 2 championships in the last few years

secondly, the importance of the draft is a million times less important than the nfl or nba because of free agency and the fact that only usa players are subject to the draft. tanking for draft picks never happens in baseball for that reason

you are right about the bucks, they are much like the hawks. thats why you see teams like philly and boston pretty much purposely tankin this upcoming season. but basketball is way different than baseball

where do you think guys like Clayton Kershaw or David Price or Buster Posey or Stephen Strasburg or Bryce Harper or Matt Harvey or Chris Sale or Mike Trout come from? All were very high picks in their respective MLB drafts, and all are still with the team that drafted them.

Who cares if you're not going to even try to make the WS.

Also, Pirates beat the Cards 7-1 today. Nope, not a good baseball team at all.

the Astros have trounced the Tigers, Rangers, Red Sox, A's, and Rays at points this season.

So obviously the Astros won 94 games (more than 2 division winners) and are in the LDS.

No?

But the Pirates don't have the #1 pick, and when you consider that the Astros are clearly in a better position to win the WS...

other reasons why the draft is not as important:

-every good player in the nba or nfl was drafted, tons of good mlb players werent
-in the mlb, theres less certainty that high picks will pan out. later round picks have a much better chance at becoming very good players

i dont even understand how someone could say pirates arent a good team lol. they made the playoffs, won the wildcard game and have a chance today to take momentum in this series. they are goin to be a powerhouse, their minor leagues are stacked. next year they will be even better

i believe teams like atlanta arent that good, and thats because they play in a terrible division. pirates play in the best division in baseball so its not like they got a bunch of cheap wins. they played 38 games vs the cards and reds for gods sake
