Not such a great idea, because after one season both would be relegated.

Haha yeah. the SPL ain't half as good as it used to be.

What about AVB being fired? Chelsea to sink into mediocrity?

No, they'll get a big manager in and it will be business as usual. A couple of big jobs going at the moment, the Chelsea job and the Tottenham job should Harry go to England. Then of course there is the England job, which nobody wants as you're on a hiding to nothing there;)

Goofle 03-05-2012 06:13 AM

Any manager worth his salt should avoid the England job at all costs.

MoonlitSunshine 03-05-2012 06:28 AM

See, that's an attitude I don't understand. Sure, if you're going to see it from a purely professional point of view, it's probably not the most lucrative job in the world, and it won't necessarily make your career, but... if I were a football manager, and someone offered me the Ireland managing post, I wouldn't think twice about it. It's your country, and it's a proud thing to be able to say you did.

That said, if I felt strongly about the English football team, I wouldn't want the team managed by someone who didn't really want to do it, not for the money, but because they want to do their country proud. Pride, and desire to win for their country is what's been missing from England. It's a damn good team of players, and any manager with an ounce of ability to tap into that could do very well with the position.

But the England job is different to a lot of other countries! Most England managers are in a no win situation, the team always goes into tournaments with the team expected to go to the very latter stages, If things don't go like so, the manager is slated and usually ridiculed in one way or another and his image as a manager forever tarnished. Terry Venebles was the exception to that rule, but every England manager over the last 30 years has been like so. The press seldom take into consideration that the pool of players available to most England mangers is usually very average indeed. Does this sound like a great job to you:p:

Goofle 03-05-2012 07:51 AM

^ That.

And as someone who doesn't have a patriotic bone in his body, you want the best man for the job, not some Stewart Pierce muggins shouting the anthem and putting out a terrible team.

At least get the muggins Stuart Pearce's name right:p:

Auto-Correct... :D

MoonlitSunshine 03-06-2012 07:59 AM

How many English managers over the last 30 years have been a) English and b) actually respected managers? Every manager that doesn't succeed gets slated, no matter what the job is.

Most of the managers have been English, Sven-Goran Erikssen started the trend of foreign managers. Yes managers do get slated by the press for failing, but the England job is an extreme as far as being slated goes. Any England manager has huge expectations heaped upon him and usually an average bunch of players, along with a media just dying to see him fail. For example, Boas was just sacked from Chelsea and had one of the best squads in the Premiership and the media actually felt sorry for him!

Perhaps with their current team (although I doubt even that) - but even if so, it would be a matter of time before Celtic were an established top flight team in England.

Doubt it'll happen anyway, even if Rangers go to the wall. Which is likely - and there is NO CHANCE both Old Firm teams would be admitted to England. It's slightly more feasible with just Celtic, though.

Xenith 03-12-2012 06:44 PM

I've always wanted to follow the EPL, especially now since my patience is wearing thin with the Knicks and I love watching soccer/football, but I can never really get my mind on a team.

I narrowed it down to Chelsea, Arsenal, and Tottenham since I have some London connections and I want a team that has the ability to stay relevant in the EPL and Europe (though Fulham is a team I will keep an eye on due to its history of giving Americans a chance).

Just wondering if any of the more knowledgeable fans (especially a fan of the three I mentioned) on here help a brother out.

Goofle 03-12-2012 07:00 PM

Arsenal are the best team to support in England. You aren't guaranteed anything as an Arsenal fan, but its one hell of a ride.

10 points behind your fiercest rivals a month back, now, after four wins on the trot, all after conceding the first goal, we are within a point.

I could imagine the match up against Milan being a rather intense ride. Personally don't think I would be disappointed at their effort though I could understand.

Goofle 03-12-2012 07:09 PM

The woeful first leg cost us, their effort in the second was phenomenal.

The second leg should give you a good feeling about rooting for a team that doesn't just roll over to die.

Also I love the concept of people owning shares of a club like with Tottenham and Arsenal.

Goofle 03-17-2012 01:17 PM

Bolton player Fabrice Muamba has apparently has a seizure of some sort during a game, they gave him CPR on the field now he is being taken to the hospital, apparently not breathing and not improving his condition at all.

I am weeping quite a bit right now.

Goofle 03-17-2012 02:27 PM

Hearing news that he is okay.

Still critical. Hope he pulls through.

Unknown Soldier 03-17-2012 04:59 PM

I've just come across this news, it always seems that every couple of years that a player seems to collapse like this and sadly it ends up being critical as well. The trend seemed to start with Vivien Foe (I think that was his name)

Goofle 03-17-2012 05:56 PM

Sorry, meant to come back in here and say he is critically ill according to latest reports.

Get well soon Fabrice.

Marc Vivien Foe.
Muamba is still fighting for his life.
Kanu almost died a long time before all this.
A serious heart defect was found while undergoing a medical.

Hope B/burn stay up for the managers sake , the **** he's had off his own supporters.
Seems like a top bloke.

Depressing wasn't it?

BBC Sport - Manchester United 4-4 Everton

What a fantastic game. It really puts another potential and likely twist in the title race before the Manchester derby, as City play Wolves in half an hour and, of course, a win would mean there were only three points between the clubs going into next weeks game.

Gotta feel for Wolves though or at least I do. They should be relegated in a couple of hours. What a great decision it was for them to sack Mick McCarthy.

Goofle 04-22-2012 03:05 PM

This has been one of the best Premier League season's ever.

Got a 7 game coupon on tomorrow.

Arsenal to beat Stoke
Swansea to beat Wolves
Newcastle to beat Wigan
Aston Villa to beat West Brom
Barnsley to beat Brighton
West Ham to beat Hull
Cowdenbeath to beat Brechin

£1.00 stake, on for £143.57, surely that's not too far-fetched a card?

What is going on at the DW?

Who are this Wigan we've seen the last few weeks? I don't know who this Wigan are!

Right, so my coupon was a complete flunk. **** football and its unpredictability.

MoonlitSunshine 04-29-2012 02:13 PM

Torres scores a hatrick in the match after he scores against barcelona and messi misses a penalty. The world has been turned upside down.

Goofle 04-29-2012 02:32 PM

Torres has been brilliant all season, just couldn't score for toffee.

Roy Hodgson as England manager, opinions?

Goofle 05-02-2012 03:39 AM

Best English manager. So it makes sense.

He's vastly experienced and once coached at Inter Milan back in the early 1990s. He wasn't the people's choice, but I actually prefer him to dodgy Harry Redknapp anyway. As for how good he'll do, that's another story based on the pool of mediocre players he's got at his disposal.

Goofle 05-02-2012 07:17 AM

He is used to doing well with mediocre players, so he will have to do the same again :D

(apart from Liverpool, of course)

Unknown Soldier 05-06-2012 02:59 PM

Well, City are actually on the verge of taking the title!:D

Urban Hat€monger ? 05-06-2012 03:03 PM

Wow

One team owned by some billionaire foreigner beat some other teams owned by billionaire foreigner.

Quite honestly I don't really give one flying shit who wins the league title anymore.

I can't wait till the Premier League crashes through the bottom of the barrel.
