Ok Heaven 17 win that one by 4-2-1 and keeping with the 80s theme, Il Duce has come up with these three albums which echo some other suggestions in the thread. Again take a few lines explaining your choice.

actually, lots of people wanted Penthouse & Pavement, but I thought there were too many covers on there, this is generally good and vibrant synth-pop, with the bedazzling Come Live With Me. only downer is Lady Ice & Mr. Hex, which pulls the album down several notches

OMD

this is probably the best Kraftwerk tribute album ever, it's mostly musique concrete with some synth-pop tunes, this is probably the only progression synth-pop will find

Japan

sure, I like Sylvian's voice and all, and Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Night Porter are fab, but it is too "ambient" and lacking in energy, perhaps some more songs like their earlier single Visions of China would make it a more adequate album

Shiiiiiit, this is a good one. I love both, but whereas Elephant hits you in the gut, SFTD plants one right between the eyes, it just reaches slightly headier heights I think.

I loved both albums when they were released. I played Songs For The Deaf to death and I basically lived inside it for months and I enjoyed Elephant nearly as much. These days however I don't really get off much on QOTSA although I still think Songs For The Deaf is a very good album, much better than their newer stuff. I prefer Elephant much more these days, It has stood the test of time better and is more suited to my current music tastes.

Wow, tough matchup. Both are extremely important albums to me, but I think SFTD is much more consistently ass-kicking than Elephant.
