ooh an official recommendation, i will be following that up

the Memphis Beatles, power pop 101, it has taken me too long to check these guys out. Alex Chilton was the definitive pop eccentric/control freak, notoriously putting band and producers through hell trying to get the perfect guitar sound. It payed off - you would never guess this was recorded in 1972 if you didn't know and they sound unnervingly close to the Posies who would come 20 years later. #1 Record is their debut and the only album featuring Chris Bell, Chilton's songwriting foil who left the group and ended up a member of the 27 Club.
Not everybody likes this kind of stuff, it's music that wears heart on sleeve and is a bit cheesy, albeit in the case of Big Star flawlessly executed. This album also has more than a touch of Roger McGuinn about it, who was something of a mentor to Alex Chilton

^ I like both #1 Record and Radio City, and that's one of my favorite songs by them.

I actually always liked Third/Sister Lovers the most, but I guess that's just me.

I have not been able to get into Third/Sister Lovers at all. I can't even bring myself to try again.

Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull
Much different than Earth 2, the only other album I've heard by them. In my opinion this one was better. I'm probably going to get something else soon.

Japanther - Skuffed Up My Huffy
Just like the cover this album is like a collage, not that it's a bad thing.

This was the first Earth album I heard and loved it. I've recently checked out the rest of their discography and was surprised at what I heard. Though they're good, the sound is a bit too droney for me. This is my favorite and I've also found it to be pretty popular amongst the MBers who listen to this genre. Good to see it mentioned again. I've got some of their stuff if you'd like. Just PM me.
