Let me know when you're accepting albums again, because I've got another I'd like to throw your way.

Gonna have to go with Urban....all of y our negative point are what I like about Throbbing Gristle

In my opinion. ..20 Jazz Funk Greats is a better choice

It'll be interesting to see your take on both Merzbow and Dead Voices on Air....as both are born from Throbbing Gristle but go on very different directions

I get the distinct feeling that TH's enthusiasm for this thread is on the wane.

I'm sure that'll turn around once he gets his much needed dose of free jazz.

@TH, when you listen to Out to Lunch! on Spotify, be sure to listen to the Rudy van Gelder edition. It's the same album, but the RVG one has better production.

Not a bit of it.
But Thursdays are busy for me and so is today, so I haven't been able to listen to my "normal" two albums per day. I'll get back to it soon enough. But no, I'm still interested in continuing on.

Whether I will still be so after listening to free jazz is another matter...

:d

Expected it to happen.

I came in to recommend this:

I remember you said you liked A Grand Don't Come For Free TH. Am I the only poster on here who's listened to this one? It's arguably his best album (with OPM) but it gets completely slept on.

Dolphy's free jazz is not anywhere near as rambunctious as your Coltranes or your Brotzmanns or your WISKs. Hell, you might not even recognize that it's free if I didn't tell you so.

Title: Out to lunch!
Artiste: Eric Dolphy
Genre: Free jazz

Love
The first track puts me totally in mind of Waits, so that makes it more palatable to me than it would otherwise be
Like the sprinkly piano and vibes/marimba/whatever
Second track is slower, little easier on my ear
Third track is bright and breezy with a kind of feeling of sixties cop/PI shows about it; some very cool drumming here, nice guitar and upright bass too.
Next one is very upbeat and cheerful, has a nice swagger to it. Mind you, it's twelve minutes long, so if I survive this... hey that was pretty nice actually.

Hate
Damn horns going wild again

End result: All right, all right dammit! For a jazz album this is pretty righteous. I like it. Happy?

So, Love or Hate? No-one more surprised than myself, but yeah, it's a Love. Or at least, not a Hate.

Chances of a full review: 3/10

My theory that it's impossible to hate Eric Dolphy is thus confirmed.

Out to Lunch! is one of my favorite jazz albums. Glad you liked it more than you hated it TH.
