Title: Cow Fingers and Mosquito Pie
Artiste: Screamin' Jay Hawkins
Genre: Blues/Funk/Soul/Rock and/or Roll
Familiarity: Pretty much zero. I know “I put a spell on you”, and didn't he do that version of Waits's “Heartattack and Vine”?
http://www.discogs.com/Screamin-Jay-.../master/290872

Track 1 Rock and roll with some nice horns; strange lyric. Not bad. Like the piano. Kind of a fifties style to the music though, something I'm not that fond of. Not a Chuck Berry, Little Richard or Elvis fan to be honest.
Track 2(Hate) I pretty much know already I'm going to hate this. See above.
Track 3(Love) OK, I know this one. Who doesn't? Good version.
Track 4(Hate) I don't like his singing (screaming) style; I know that's why he's called what he is, but it doesn't sit well with me. It's a cover of a classic, so that's something but no, I don't like it. This is going to be an ordeal.
Track 5(Hate) Wasn't great either. Taht stupid motorboating sound he makes is very annoying.
Track 6(Hate) Yawn
Track 7(Hate) No, don't like this at all.
Track 8(Love) What is this? A forties film soundtrack?Oh right: I know this one. Good version to be fair.
Track 9(Love) Yeah this one isn't bad.
Track 10(Love) Christ! Only halfway through. At least all the songs are short, something to be thankful for I guess. Oh great! Added screams plus jungle noises. Good blues beat though. Might be on to something here. Yeah, I actually really like this one.
Track 11(Love) And this one is very good, like this.
Track 12(Love) Yeah, this is fun. I can dig this. Actually, I see there are only fifteen tracks, as some of those are I guess remixes or re-recordings of ones I've already listened to.
Track 13(Love) Something odd has happened here. I really was not enjoying this, and now suddenly I am. When did that happen? This one is very good too, with its Arabic rhythm
Track 14(Love) This one's fun too, though he's back to that annoying motorboat sound...
Track 15(Love) Pretty cool indeed.

End result: That was a very weird experience! I started out bored, then hating the album, expecting it was a shoe-in for Hate. Then suddenly I started getting into it, and before I knew where I was I was actually enjoying it, and I ended up being a lot less dismissive of it than I had expected or intended to be.

So, Love or Hate? Rather surprisingly to me, it turns out to be a Love.

He had an amazing voice and the whole voodoo shtick is quite amusing. I just wish he had more interesting songs.

Maybe it took you a little bit to get into his singing style, it's a little rough around the edges. Even though it's got the "motorboating" on it, I recommend returning to "You Made Me Love You." Probably one of my favourite tracks from Screamin' Jay. I know you're busy, so just throw it on when you're having a wank or something .

Title: Bizarre Ride II
Artiste: The Pharcyde
Genre: Hip-hop
Familiarity: Zero
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bizarr...cyde#Reception

Track 1(Love) Love the little instrumental intro; very soul
Track 2(Love) Isn't this “Walk this way”? Funny and entertaining though. Like it. Piano is great.
Track 3(Love) It's funny because it's true. MAD piano!
Track 4(Love) Like the beat in this, and the melody. Woman on the phone is hilarious.
Track 5(Love) Yeah, this is really good too.
Track 6 Meh
Track 7(Love) Great energy and fun in this one. Really like the melody.
Track 8(Love) Not fond of scratching... yeah but I do like the song.
Track 9 Always good to start off with some jazzy piano ... and it's over.
Track 10(Love) This is really funny. Like it.
Track 11(Love) And this is ****in' hilarious!
Track 12(Love) Nice sort of swaying rhythm on this
Track 13(Love) Ah yeah, this is great too. Don't think there's likely to be anything on this I don't like. Cool that they can sing and not just rap.
Track 14(Love) This is really cheerful
Track 15(Love) This is slower; very catchy
Track 16 Meh, not mad about this one. Pity, as I had hoped it would close strongly. Oh well.

End result: Probably the first real hip-hop album I've enjoyed since The Streets. Great energy and enthusiasm, a big slice of fun and the definite feel of a bunch of guys just enjoying themselves without being all up themselves about who's harder or pulls the most bitches or whatever. Very refreshing and very entertaining. Micco may be starting to be my new go-to guy!

So, Love or Hate? Pure Love for this one.

Glad you liked it! One of my favorites and one of Hip-Hop's greatest ever albums, and anyone who says different doesn't know Hip-Hop! "Oh ****" is one of my favorite songs to get hyped with and "Otha Fish" is a mellow good time. In case you were wondering "Passing Me By" was the big single for this album, probably their most popular, also. The final track is really just a love song to early hip-hop pioneers and songs but I agree it's the weakest of the album, although it's a lot more fun to listen to if you know the tributes and references they use in it. Salute!

If you're interested the emcee who singraps on Otha Fish, Slimkid3, released a new song in 2014 called "I Know, Didn't I" and it ended being my favorite track of the year, check it out if you have the time!

I've actually never heard that album. Mellow hip hop is by far my favorite so it sounds like I should definitely check it out

Just a heads up, Otha Fish, Passin' Me By, are the only really mellow songs on the album lol. Their second album "Labcabincalifornia" is full of much more mellow tracks.

This track is so good and I'm glad you turned me on to it.

I think, knowing your tastes, and mine, you'd be into that album YD. I'd definitely give it a spin.

Title: Sea when absent
Artiste: A Sunny Day in Glasgow
Genre: Shoegaze
Familiarity: Zero
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_When_Absent

Track 1(Hate) WAY too abrupt a start; scared the **** out of me! Very buzzy; hard to make out the vox again. Sounds like there might be a nice melody in there somewhere but it's buried under layers of sound. Ah, now it's clearing up halfway through and I can hear better. She seems to have a nice voice. But then the keys or violin or whatever it is blast off again and it all gets too loud and messed up. Sorry, it's getting a Hate because I can't make out much at all.
Track 2 This is nice, has a sort of Deacon Blue feel to it, but there are samples cutting in and out of it, which always annoys me and offsets my ear. I can at least make out the vocals this time. Music is still too fragmented and chaotic for my tastes.
Track 3(Love) This is slower, more together (at least for now!) and could be my first chance to actually hear a whole song... Okay, this is whole lot better. Right, spoke too soon: someone's strangling a cat. Or playing a guitar badly. One or the other. D'Oh! It doesn't last though luckily. This one's getting close to going Green... and we're there!
Track 4(Love) Another great melody to start off, if they'll just all play together and not across one another. Okay, going well so far. Like this. There we go: another one.
Track 5(Love) This is really uptempo, sort of growly guitar and I think we're back to those submerged voca --- oh no, I can hear her okay. That actually sounds like an incredibly fast didgeridoo, though I'm sure it's just a synth. Yeah, this is quite good.
Track 6(Love) Nice kind of whimsical tune here. But now they've thrown in a big bombastic guitar, sort of ruins it. No, actually, I'm wrong: it enhances it.
Track 7(Love) Yeah, this is really lovely
Track 8(Love) Short but quite nice
Track 9(Love) This one's nice, even if the singing does go into that sort of phased/echoey/inaudible format for a short while.
Track 10 Not mad about this
Track 11 Nor this one to be fair. Weak ending.

End result: The first few tracks really put me off; it sounded like nobody knew what the other person was playing and it was really confused. Once it settled down it was okay, but I couldn't see myself doing other than just shrugging and saying “Yeah, wasn't bad” at this point.

So, Love or Hate? Still and all, have to give it a Love really, which again, I did not consider would be the outcome when I began listening.
