The one day minimum is simply the preset option that's available to us.
Again, there are no qualifications for banning time, other than simply what the moderators agree on and decide to select from the preset list.

Can you ban someone from specific parts of the site, or just MB in general? (sorry to play 20 questions)

Bans only apply to MB in general. You can still view the site, but you cannot log in.

I don't mind the questions. :)

I've overcome a couple permabans, I'm quite aware lol. I recall making superflous accounts during my bans so that I could still post, but they all knew it was me. I also recall telling everyone that I hope they all die in their sleep (I think that one bought me a month). MB was a different ballpark back in the day, it was like the wild west (but with less syphilis). I used to be such a douche, seriously, ask Urban and RT.

I have a question for you, then.
In your bans, how often would you find yourself viewing the site?

I don't remember exactly, being that it was so long ago. Most likely, right after my ban, I viewed it nonstop for a few hours to see what was being said. I viewed it a few times a day over the next few days, and then gave up and waited it out. Then when my ban was over, I made an "I hate you all" type of return thread that garnered me another ban. I was young and dumb, but fiesty as hell. I deserved what I got.

Dr_Rez 06-24-2011 09:06 PM

Why was my post removed while the 2 pages of is he straight or not was kept?

Paedantic Basterd 06-24-2011 09:09 PM

I have actually heard from others that you cannot view the site, merely a message telling you that you are banned?

That's if you try to log in. If you clear your cookies you can browse as a guest.

Thank you. That answers my question perfectly.

I'm not sure which post you're referring to or when it was posted/deleted, but I can say that the mods are currently in the process of hammering out what constitutes a deletable post, among a lot of other things, and that everyone should hang in there until we're all able to do things a bit more consistently.

Once you cool down from being banned and get your head on straight, there's nothing that you can really do but wait it out. You can make an auxilliary account to post in the meantime, but that's a bad idea, as multiple accounts are forbidden. Getting unbanned is a dual-edged sword though. On one hand, you're happy to be able to post and congregate again. On the other hand, you obviously see your banning as unfair and have pent up aggression towards whomever banned or provoked you, and you may fly off the handle in an attempt at revenge. This is also a bad idea, as it leads to another ban. Just suck it up and take it, that's what I learned. Wishing death upon everyone is futile. I don't know how many "I hate you all, I'm leaving forever" threads that I've seen/posted lol. The internet is serious business for some people.

Wow. I couldn't imagine being banned from here. I just don't think I could ever lose it enough to warrant it. I think there is a silent way of being respectful to the place/members and still having your views. But hey, you can't win em' all.

Being banned from somewhere isn't always about losing it, I know that from experience. I've been banned from a forum before now basically for being a nuisance within the rules.

Long story short, the forum in question seemed ok at first glance, the more I posted however the more I started to realise the place was just a ****ing groupthink of retards and arrogant nerds par excellence. I can't really overstate just how deluded the mentality of the place and most everyone in it really was.

So of course, me being me, I make a whole bunch of posts in various threads and start a few threads of my own that stay within the rules, but the content is pretty much just a harsh critique of the mentality within the place. Drama occurs like a mother****er because the groupthink totally can't handle the idea I'm right, but not a one of them is articulate enough to argue back against my points without coming out of the exchange looking stupid.

So the mods get pissed at me for inciting drama, when, delicate flowers that they are, some of the more stupid members of the forum complain that I'm mean to them.

A while later, I break an insignificant rule via sarcasm, and the mods deliberately misinterpret my intent, claim I was attacking other members, and ban me. I've even gotten a partial admission of such from one of the mods who was less involved in the decision.

And yet people wonder why I defend our mod team. I've seen bad moderation and worse communities, and this ain't it. Of course I'm going to defend the mods. They could be a ****load worse, and I've not really seen any mod teams that are significantly better, except on forums where the community has no real troublemakers for the mods to deal with, which is hardly a fair bar to judge by, considering this forums size and propensity for attracting people who engender negative opinion consistently.

Paedantic Basterd 06-25-2011 12:18 PM

I didn't even read the rules when I came here, because I imagined, and was correct about them being, common forum courtesy.

Ditto. Never read the rules on any forum I've ever been on. Only been a source of trouble on the bad ones. And those are the ones where after getting told about the rules, I read them and did my damndest to skirt them or break them creatively anyway.

Howard the Duck 06-25-2011 12:32 PM

i'm basically used to loosely moderated anarchistic forums

so coming here takes some used to, at first

then again, i'm viewed as a moderate on those other forums, so....

The Virgin 06-25-2011 02:40 PM

i've been reading the rules. fyi

I've read them and compared to other forums, MB does allow certain topics to be discussed that other forums absolutely will not allow.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-26-2011 12:02 PM

So what's going on with spammers here lately?

There are 16 post spammers leaving posts with no content all over the forum and it's being left up for days and weeks on end.

Are you having a committee wide discussions lasting weeks on deleting spammers now too?

FaSho 06-26-2011 12:37 PM

Mods must have to give them the Benefit of the Doubt now, considering most spammer's posts have more content than The Virgin's.

i'm not a spammer. just to clear things with you.

by the way, would anyone know if mods have access to our email addresses? like when we register before we become members, we need to provide our email addresses, would they know that as well?

Nope, no one would know if that was the case.

Paedantic Basterd 06-26-2011 04:22 PM

I don't necessarily know which posters you're referring to, but to be honest, about half the staff is away/minimally active right now for whatever personal reasons, and the rest of us can't be everywhere at once.

It's always helpful to report post items that break the rules in the meantime.

Urban Hat€monger ? 06-26-2011 05:42 PM

As an ex mod trust me.
The last thing you want is people reporting spam.

You'll have multiple people reporting the same posts the moment they're written and your reported posts & infractions forum will just get flooded.

Paedantic Basterd 06-26-2011 05:44 PM

I don't mean as a general rule, just while we're down on staff.

but from the content of most of your posts, you can mislead people to think that you are

He's either just really stupid / ignorant / undereducated
or
a desperate attention seeker.

Cursory empirical research makes this obvious and I don't care enough to make a hypothesis. Of course none of those traits alone are worthy of a ban. He'll either go away or not.

I probably shouldn't have even written this because he'll inevitably respond.

The best approach I can think of is to ignore his response to this post and also ignore any other post he makes. I'll do that and I advise you to do the same, Il Duce. It looks like he's got you baited more than anyone.

You expect someone not to respond when you make a derogatory post about them? Were you born yesterday?

I still don't understand all the hate for The Virgin. I find that he brings some much needed levity to the boards. His musical opinions and tastes may not be as evolved as other peoples', but he still stands behind them, which is respectable.

For as much grief as The Virgin gets on here for being a "troll", you're the one baiting him into an argument, whether you realize it or not (which I'm pretty sure you do).
