When Someone is Banned

Alright, little idea I got here.

When someone is banned, why not display on their profile when they were banned and for what reason, and how long the ban is in effect until? Like I can see on my own profile my "infractions" but not anyone elses. Someone like RandyMarsh (just a recent example) gets banned and nobody knows why or for how long. Why not just make it available? :usehead:

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-11-2011 01:07 PM

Why do you need to know so badly?

duga 02-11-2011 01:08 PM

Yeah, we mods like having inside information. Maybe if you ask nicely we will tell you.

Bloozcrooz 02-11-2011 01:08 PM

Its showing why in the moderators hate mail topic..the dude is relentless and patronizing the mods

Dirty 02-11-2011 01:08 PM

It isn't a life or death situation. Forgive me if that is how it sounded.

But why leave people in the dark when people are interested? Everytime someone is banned people speculate about it and wonder. Why not just have it available?

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-11-2011 01:11 PM

I don't know why people bother speculating.
99/100 it's usually someone having a meltdown and is usually deleted so there's nothing to see anyway.

Yeah I see that, I was just using him as an example. Not sure if a reason was ever really given for him being banned initially even though I wasn't a fan of him anyways. It's like if I hop on MB tomorrow and you are banned, I'd be interested as to why. My guess would be drunken insults  but your posts would be deleted and I'd wanna know why.

This, and if were to ever be temp banned from a forum, I personally wouldn't want everyone knowing why. It's not anybody's business.

So... when someones banned you don't think anyone is interested as to why? Or for how long?

Why not just wait until the person comes back and ask them yourself?
If they want everyone to know, then they'll make that info available.

I can PM you every time I ban someone if you like. Of course 99% of the time it's a spammer so your inbox will probably fill up pretty fast.

It's not for the mods to go around announcing bannings. You just give them even more attention if you do that.
It's not like they're banned from the whole internet.
I'm sure if it's a regular poster someone will talk to them at some point.

How do I know if they'll be back? Why not just post it in the member bans thread? Like Randy Marsh: banned for _______ days for _______ reason

If you see them posting in the forums... they're back.

Lol..drunken insults...oh yeah it is friday isnt it??..nice!! Naw I get what your saying and like ive stated before drama is interesting in everything its involved in. Look at that crappy show Jersey Shore. As for Marsh he always fired back with vulgarity..he even did somewhat to me when I was trying to help him out as what to not post. Didnt bother me though I found it comical

Guybrush 02-11-2011 01:20 PM

Actually, I don't mind transparency, but I don't think I'd want to report in a thread to the whole community every time I ban someone. Besides, when explaining why you ban someone, you'd also have to demonstrate how the banned member broke the rules. Often, the banned member's offending posts will be deleted and so reports like that could put the banned user in a worse light than he/she would otherwise be. Hence, perhaps there should be some level of discretion - not the keeping it a secret kind, but perhaps we shouldn't advertise the reasons why when people are banned.

But, if someone sends me a PM asking me why I banned someone, I'm happy to explain with quotations of the offending posts etc. It's only natural members of the community are curious, interested or even offended which is perfectly alright, so don't hesitate to send a PM.

Really!? :finger:

Basically it's just like... A lot of members wonder when someone gets banned how long they'll be gone and for what reason. "Why?" doesn't really even matter does it? Curiosity, maybe it's someone who they talk to on here a good bit in certain threads, whatever. I don't see how it's nobody's business when it's all happening on a forum that we are all a part of.

Usually if it's a member that's known enough to be missed someone starts a thread about it and the mods end up responding with an explanation. Nobody is hiding anything here. All you have to do is ask.

Wow, wasn't expecting a solid response here. Thanks, well said. I will send you a PM if I am ever curious. Just seemed like having it on their profile would be pretty easy. You can already see your own infractions, I don't see anything bad coming from letting the rest of the MB members know why someone got the axe.

I actually don't think we have any way of making the explanations appear on their profile though. Like I said above, if you want to know just ask.

Freebase Dali 02-11-2011 01:32 PM

We could put it in their signature, but that's about it.
I wouldn't have a problem putting their ban expiration date in their sigs if it's someone who's actually an integrated member here and other members would like a reference. But I'm not going to put someone's rap sheet out in the open. The members themselves can decide whether to let people know or not.

Raust 02-11-2011 01:54 PM

Maybe MB should get a seperate website where you could type in the users name and then it would show why they got banned. Much like some of the judicial websites out there hahaha!

Of course people are going to be interested - it's gossip. I know everyone loves good gossip, but:

If this forum was really so strict about people being dicks then we'd all get banned except for like 4 people.

I like this idea. Something to think about. I can't see any regulars getting banned, I'd probably be voted most likely if there were such a vote though, so I am requesting that in the event of a ban, the expiration date please be posted in my sig.

TheBig3 02-11-2011 02:22 PM

Well for what its worth, since I've been given an infraction for literally nothing, I don't think explaining yourselves is out of the question. And since apparently the ****ing thing is permanent, I'd love for everyone to say their piece about the rule infracted upon so we don't create rampant, unchecked mod power.

And yeah, I'm still pretty pissed about that ****ing stunt.

Really? Wasn't it meant as a joke?

Or are you being facetious?

Bloozcrooz 02-11-2011 02:53 PM

I dont get why anyone would be pissed? Whats the big deal? meh

Paedantic Basterd 02-11-2011 03:14 PM

Seems like a bit of an invasion of privacy. Granted, trolls probably couldn't care less who knows about their dramz.

Bloozcrooz 02-11-2011 03:22 PM

I can see someone not wanting their buisness put out there for everyone to see. But if your getting pissed because you got a write up your probally taking things a little to seriously. Are there not bigger issues in life then a write up on MB to get under your skin? Im not all for following rules in life but if you do something to get in trouble just suffer the consequences and go on. Not a big deal

Paedantic Basterd 02-11-2011 03:31 PM

I mean, I suppose the point is that it's not actually our business, as curious as I know we all are.

But no, seriously, I feel your pain. I got infracted when I first joined for using the name "Hitler". It was out of jest, both the post and the infraction, but it annoys the crap out of me that it's always there every time I open my user CP and I can't remove it. After all this time, it still makes me think there's a new visitor message for a second.

TheCunningStunt 02-11-2011 04:27 PM

Who honestly gives a fuck?

If it's a forum regular that's been banned, there's usually a thread started asking why the member in question was banned and a mod usually addresses the situation.

If it's a forum regular that's been banned, there's usually a thread started bitching about why the member in question was banned and a mod usually has to wade through an uprising of Egyptian proportions to arrive at reiterating what no one read, or cared about, in the forum rules.

Fixed.
